Senior Brittani Gutz dreams of serving others as a physical therapist

Senior Brittani Gutz from Plainview, Nebraska, is majoring in exercise science and minoring in biology and psychology at Concordia University, Nebraska. She works with athletic trainers on campus and participates in various intramurals on campus.
“I chose to study at Concordia because of the close-knit and faith-filled community,” she said. “Concordia is different because the faculty takes the time to get to know their students. With smaller class sizes, students are able to form better connections with their professors that last beyond their time here at Concordia. This university also places their values on faith and provides multiple opportunities for students to gather and build their faith together.”
She said the exercise science program at Concordia Nebraska is different than others because students have more opportunities for hands-on experience and smaller class sizes allow for more collaboration and more one-on-one time with professors.
“On top of that, we have excellent lab equipment that is not normally found in universities of our size,” she explained.
Brittani found her way to Concordia because her older brother Jason also attended the university.
“It was on my radar when I first started looking at colleges. The faith-based community really drew me here, and Seward's small-town atmosphere made me feel at home. I enjoy walking around campus and seeing friendly faces everywhere I go,” she said. “My favorite thing about my Concordia experience so far is the various opportunities that are presented to students. There really is something for everyone here. I have also truly appreciated being able to find people who share the same faith background that I do.”

Brittani said she enjoys attending chapel throughout the week each week and thankful for the Christ-centered focus of the university.
“Concordia Nebraska provides many opportunities for students to build their faith,” she said. “I have had professors that pray with students.
Following graduation, Brittani plans to attend physical therapy school. She is currently in the application and interview process. After obtaining her doctor of physical therapy degree, she plans to practice in a small-town clinic.
“My family is very close. I have one older brother, Jason. He is my biggest role model in life. Although he is in heaven now, I carry him every day in my heart,” she said. “Our family enjoys plenty of outdoor activities as well as playing cards. My golden retriever, Bella, also likes to partake in the fun. She especially enjoys going for rides!”
When she’s not in class or studying, you’ll find Brittani going for a run, spending time with family, watching sunsets, paddleboarding or reading.
Brittani said she also appreciates that her professors and others at the university have taken the time to get to know her personally and guide her.
“They have exposed me to various opportunities that have expanded my horizons and skill sets. They have also been able to connect me with other sources who can help aid in my journey,” she said. “Through my advisor, multiple professors and my boss on campus, I have received a lot of guidance that has prepared me very well for the process of applying and attending physical therapy school.”
In Concordia University, Nebraska’s pre-physical therapy program, students take courses in biology, chemistry and physics as well as critical thinking, analytical reasoning and communication skills to give them the sturdy foundation needed to successfully continue education in physical therapy. Hands-on labs, state-of-the-art science facilities, internship experiences with local healthcare professionals and research opportunities will prepare students for a fulfilling career as a PT.
