Dr. Jesse Florang has served at Concordia University, Nebraska since 2020 and currently leads as director of the Master of Arts in School Counseling program. With a deep background in mental health and education, he brings a passion for equipping school counselors to meet the academic, emotional and spiritual needs of today’s students.
Florang holds an Ed.D. in Health Care Education and Leadership with a specialization in mental health from Clarkson College in Omaha, Nebraska. He also earned an Ed.S. in Educational and Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri–Columbia, an M.S.Ed. in Community Counseling from the University of Nebraska–Kearney and a B.A. in history with a minor in education from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
His teaching and research interests include adolescent mental health, cyberbullying, social-emotional learning, empathy and Lutheran education. He developed Concordia Nebraska’s trauma and resilience certificate program and regularly contributes to professional publications. His articles have appeared in eSchool News, Journal of School Counseling, Nursing Made Incredibly Easy, and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is the recipient of the 2020 APEX Award of Excellence for Health and Medical Writing.
Florang is an active member of the American School Counselor Association, Nebraska School Counselor Association and Nebraska Counseling Association. He previously served in leadership on the Board of Education at Zion Lutheran School in Kearney, Nebraska.
A lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney, Jesse values the opportunity to develop future school counselors in a Lutheran faith-based environment.
Jesse lives in Kearney with his wife, Ashli, and their three children—Harper, Emma and Theo.
