Undergraduate admissions counselor Hannah Swor enjoys helping new college students make big decisions

Hannah Swor works as one of Concordia Nebraska’s undergraduate admissions counselors, meeting with prospective students and their families to introduce them to the university and walk alongside them in the college decision-making journey. She said that she enjoys guiding students as they make “big decisions” about where to attend college.
“My favorite part of my job is guiding students into making the first ‘big’ decision in their adult life,” she said. “A lot of the types of people I work with are high school seniors who have never needed to make a life-changing decision like picking where to go to college.”
As an admissions counselor, Swor meets with visiting families and students, talking to them about Concordia Nebraska’s values, student life, campus culture, the application and enrollment process and financial aid information. Admissions counselors help to enroll students at the university and answer their questions about the processes involved.
Swor married her husband Caleb, who is a senior art therapy and pre-seminary student at Concordia, in 2023. Before this, she lived in Houston, Texas until 2022 and Lincoln, Neb. until 2023.
Concordia Nebraska is unique in the way that we really set students up for success in their adult lives. There are so many staff and faculty members whose entire job is to make sure these students are successful in academics, extracurriculars, their spiritual life and life after college.
“Once [Caleb and I] got married, I decided to start applying to different jobs, and I heard of an opening in the admissions department at Concordia,” she said. “I have been part of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod my entire life and wanted to start working at a place where I could be open about my faith and share it while also being closer to home without commuting every day.”
Now, she enjoys seeing how Concordia Nebraska is unique from other universities.
“Concordia is unique in the way that we really set students up for success in their adult lives. There are so many staff and faculty members whose entire job is to make sure these students are successful in academics, extracurriculars, their spiritual life and life after college,” she said. “I went to a large public university in Texas that didn’t have the capacity to do these things for me – especially the faith aspect. It’s amazing to see how Concordia is able to cater to so many different needs of the students here.”
She also takes part in some of the university’s newest offerings for faculty and staff members – taking staff development courses, entitled CUNE 101, 102 and 103, which focus on Christian higher education and its impacts. Swor also said that the university encourages faculty and staff to attend chapel services, which she does, saying that she has a “huge appreciation for being able to attend chapel and hearing the Word of God each day while I’m at work.”
Most of Swor’s family lives in Texas; her parents live in Houston and her sister lives in Austin, while her in-laws reside in the Dallas area. Her sister-in-law, Rachel Wells ALND ‘15, as well as Rachel’s husband and son, live in the Seward area, where Rachel has published several novels.
In her free time, Hannah likes to stay active; she also enjoys baking and cooking, especially when she can bring her treats into the admissions office where she works.
“Anyone who works in Weller knows that the Admissions office always has food!” she said.
