Sophomore Micah Zeckzer of New Haven, Indiana, is studying exercise science at Concordia University, Nebraska. He is also in the University A Cappella Choir and the Vocal Jazz/Chamber Choir

“I have three siblings, and two of them were in A Cappella under the direction of Dr. von Kampen. Bethany was in A Cap all four years and graduated in 2022. Caleb was also in A Cap all four years and graduated in 2024. Bethany and Caleb were also both in Wind Symphony, and Caleb was also in the Vocal Jazz/Chamber Choir. My parents – Rev. Scott Zeckzer and Deborah (Eifert) Zeckzer ‘89 - were under the direction of von Kampen when he was student teaching at Lutheran High School East in Harper Woods, Michigan.”

Zeckzer said his favorite thing about being in the choir is being able to make beautiful music while praising God but said the connections and relationships he’s formed during his time in the choir are a blessing as well. When he’s not in class or the choir room, you’ll find Zeckzer singing, weightlifting, cooking and spending time with friends.

Zeckzer said he feels that his time at Concordia will prepare him for his future work by teaching him how to be a servant towards others, like Jesus was. Following his time at Concordia, he plans to go to graduate school and obtain a master’s degree in athletic training and one day serve as a college athletic trainer.

“Concordia does an incredible job developing my faith, whether that is daily chapel, weekly church at one of the many close congregations or just the people around me who share the faith,” he said.

He said he chose to study at Concordia because of the university’s exercise science program, but the university’s music department and renowned A Cappella Choir were also a big draw.

“What makes Concordia different from other universities is the number of relationships that you can make with fellow believers around you. It seems like everybody cares about you, especially the professors,” he said. “The professors always push you hard and help you stay on track, no matter what happens. They want to see you succeed.”

At Concordia University, Nebraska, music is a vibrant part of campus life. About a third of Concordia Nebraska students participate in music through lessons, ensembles and classes. Concordia Nebraska’s music students and alumni have earned regional and national honors in performance and composition, demonstrating the strength of the university’s Christ-centered music education.
