The Plum Creek Literacy Festival will hold its eighth annual Breakfast and Books event on Saturday, March 23, 2024.

The event is aimed toward teachers, librarians and book lovers of all ages. It consists of a breakfast buffet, book sales and keynote presentations, this year given by Daniel Kirk, Hyewon Yum and Robert and Lisa Papp. The authors will be available for book signing after the conclusion of the morning’s events and talks.

Daniel Kirk will give the first keynote address, discussing “Where Ideas are Born” and the origins of his story ideas. Hyewon Yum will talk about “Faces in Picture Books,” and finally, Robert and Lisa Papp will discuss the visual aspects of storytelling and the benefits of therapy dogs in “Telling a Story with Pictures.”

Dr. Dylan Teut, director of the Plum Creek Literacy Festival and associated programming, spoke to the importance of literacy events like Breakfast and Books.

“Living in a world full of division, confusion and chaos can be discouraging. Each Plum Creek event we host aims to bring together people of all ages from all walks of life to celebrate all of the gifts we have in common. One of these gifts is the shared power of story – spoken, written, illustrated. The gift of story is a powerful way to connect and encourage individuals. Our events are always rich with these sort of connection opportunities.”

The authors who will attend the Breakfast and Books event represent this variety of literary gifts.

Daniel Kirk is an author and illustrator who has written over 40 books for children, including the bestselling “Library Mouse” series. His other books include “Rhino in the House” and “Newton and Curie, Science Squirrels.” "Library Mouse” is a Booklist Editor’s Choice book as well as the recipient of the 2012 Parents Choice Award.

Hyewon Yum is the author and illustrator of books like “Lion Needs a Haircut” and “The Twins’ Blanket.” She has won the Golden Kite Award, the Society of Illustrators’ Founder’s Award, and received a Kirkus Reviews Best Books of the Year award for her book “Mom, It’s My First Day of Kindergarten!”

Robert Papp is an artist and illustrator whose work with oil paints has been featured on covers of numerous books for both children and adults. Currently, he designs covers for the Cooks Illustrated magazine and paints for leisure. He is married to Lisa Papp.

Lisa Papp is a children’s author and illustrator. She is the creator of the Madeline Finn children’s series and has contributed to many other works, including illustrations for several American Girl historical fiction novels. She has won several awards for both her writing and illustrating, including the 2012 NAPPA Storytelling Award and the 2013 Pennsylvania Keystone to Reading Award.
