In Colombia, you have to choose either school or sports. I have to study because I love graphic design, but I also love soccer. Here, I can do both.

“In Columbia, there’s not a lot of support from the government for student-athletes,” says graphic design major Carlos Acosta Davila. “You have to choose either school or sports. I have to study because I love graphic design, but I also love soccer.” His fondness for both his sport and major made the choice of coming to Concordia easy.

One difficulty emerged once he was here, however. “The thing I had to get used to was speaking English. I had to tell people to talk slowly,” he says. “The first three weeks were the hardest. I went to bed with headaches.” Luckily, Carlos found a great support system in the people at Concordia. His teammates on the soccer field and the people he’s met in the art program feel like family, and have been the biggest factor in helping him adjust to life at Concordia.
