Subsidized loans are need-based and the eligibility is determined by the results of your FAFSA’s EFC (expected family contribution). Your cost of attendance (COA) less your EFC = your unmet need. Undergraduate students may have a combination of subsidized and unsubsidized loans.
If a student is not eligible for a subsidized loan, they may be eligible to borrow an unsubsidized loan. Interest payments may be deferred until you are no longer enrolled in school.
Monthly principal and interest payments on both the subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford Loans begins after a student graduates, withdraws, or drops to less than half-time attendance.
A student may not borrow more than their COA and may not exceed the federal annual loan limits or the aggregate limit as set by the U.S. Department of Education. The annual limit for graduate students is currently set at $20,500. The aggregate limit is $138,500.
The annual limit for an independent undergraduate DCP student is $5,500 subsidized and $7,000 unsubsidized. The undergraduate aggregate limit is $57,500. Current interest rates for Direct Stafford Loans may be obtained at the U.S. Department of Education website – www.ed.gov.
Loan proceeds are electronically applied directly to your student account on the date scheduled by the Financial Aid Office. To assure that all aid can be credited to your account, complete all online requirements as soon as possible.
NOTE: Students should always be prepared to pay for books and supplies as financial aid will not be available at the time needed to purchase these items. Loans proceeds will generally be processed 3 to 4 weeks after a class begins. The disbursement and refund dates can be found on the portal under General Information.
