A Change of Plans

All of the English professors are equally wonderful in their own way. They are each so different, which makes them all essential to the department.

Hannah Fortna chose Concordia for its great art program, where she thought she’d be spending her four years of college getting a BFA. That wasn’t part of God’s plan for her, however. After taking several English classes, she discovered that her passion lay in writing. Hannah’s art and English professors made the transition easy.

“When making my decision to switch to an English major, I spoke with several of my professors, including Dr. Don Robson (professor of art) and Dr. Laurie Zum Hofe (professor of English), both of whom were very supportive mentors and offered me sound advice,” Hannah says. “By the end of my freshman year I had decided to switch majors, and I haven’t regretted that decision once.”

The supportive faculty are one of the best parts of the Concordia experience for Hannah. She says she could never choose a favorite professor. “All of the English professors are equally wonderful in their own way. They are each so different, which makes them all essential to the department—they each offer a different perspective on the subject, which complements the perspectives of others. We English students wouldn’t be as open-minded and well-rounded as we are without the teaching of all of our professors together.”
