A LinkedIn profile is a page that summarizes your career history and education. It highlights your skills, experience and interests. One of the purposes of having a LinkedIn profile is to create a positive first impression. Your profile is a way to capture your “personal brand”, which is made up of your experiences, values, skills and interests, in a way that gives potential employers a sense of why they should want you on their team.

Some of the key benefits of having a LinkedIn profile is finding job opportunities, having the ability to easily conduct research on companies and professionals, staying up to date with your industry, being able to grow your career and being able to build credibility.

Many employers use LinkedIn as a platform to post job openings, as well as to look for potential candidates for these openings. As you build your network by making connections with other people on LinkedIn, you gradually gain access to unadvertised positions and insider information that can give you an advantage over other people in your industry. You can network on LinkedIn by sending personalized messages to people that you have met at events and would like to build a connection with, joining industry-specific groups on LinkedIn and participating in online discussions.

A LinkedIn profile also provides you with the opportunity to showcase your skills, experience and accomplishments in a way that a physical resume cannot. Your profile allows you to showcase not only your work history, but also your achievements, projects, milestones, certifications, awards, and capstones that you have worked on and earned over the years. Your profile tells a unique narrative of who you are, what you’re passionate about, and what you can do for the company. You can also have former employers or co-workers endorse skills that you list on your profile. This highlights your strengths and professionalism for potential employers. Your connections can also write recommendations on your profile, which can make your profile stand out.

LinkedIn also provides you with the tools to research companies and discover industry insights. Company profiles on LinkedIn provide a plethora of information pertaining to their mission and values and including employee testimonials and company updates. LinkedIn allows you to follow influential voices in your industry, join relevant groups and read articles and posts written by industry experts. By immersing yourself in industry conversations, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the industry’s inner workings and position yourself as a go-to professional in your field.

A LinkedIn profile is a fantastic way to grow your network and learn more about your industry and different job openings. It is a great place to start while in college because you can grow your network and look at opportunities while still studying. Then when you graduate you have several connections that you can contact to discover the career path that is right for you.
