Rev. Scott Schmieding, a 1987 Concordia grad and current Board of Regents member, knows what it is to face adversity. In 1997, while serving as a pastor, Schmieding lost his tongue because of a malignant tumor. After the surgery, Schmieding wondered how he would fulfill his calling and spread the word of God if he couldn't speak. But God had a plan. Schmieding continued his pastoral duties, including preaching, at the church he was serving in Baton Rouge, La. In March Schmieding was called as senior pastor to Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Charles, Mo. Schmieding's experience was recounted in an article by Tim Townsend for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

'"The history of the Bible is the story of God using imperfect people for his perfect purposes," he told the Post-Dispatch. "I'm just one in a very long line of imperfect people being used by God."'
