Concordia’s music department hosted high school students from across the country during National Honor Choir Day on Nov. 5 and National Honor Band Day on Nov. 12.

What used to be known as Musical Arts Day, has transformed into dedicated days for each discipline. During the two days, high school students had the opportunity to learn from Concordia’s music faculty and students in clinics and rehearsals, with each day ending with a combined performance.

“We feel blessed to be able to offer these experiences for young people—to help them connect with other talented musicians and improve their God-given talents,” said Kurt E. von Kampen, Concordia music department chair. “This is a great way for our students to share their knowledge, while high school students experience an excellent collegiate musical program."

On Nov. 12, Concordia welcomed nearly 50 students for National Honor Band Day, including instrument clinics and a performance with Concordia’s University Concert Band.

More than 100 high school student musicians were selected from more than 200 auditions to participate in National Honor Choir Day on Nov. 5. The event, started in 1999 to help high school students improve their choral singing and showcase Concordia’s music department, wrapped up with a concert at St. John Lutheran Church that featured the Honor Choir and Concordia’s University A Cappella Choir.
