190 students participated in the High School Quiz Bowl hosted by Concordia’s History, Geography, and Criminal Justice departments on Oct. 26.

Nearly 190 high school students showcased their academic knowledge at the second annual High School Quiz Bowl held at Concordia University, Nebraska on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Participants traveled from 26 different high schools around the state making up 42 total teams.

“Our goal in hosting this event is to bring academic-minded students to Concordia to see our campus, meet professors, learn about our geography and history programs and compete in an academic quiz bowl focusing on history and geography,” said Dr. Joel Helmer, professor of geography and chair of the department of history, geography and criminal justice. “We are thrilled with the outcome of the event and the growth we have experienced in just one year is amazing.”

The 2015 quiz bowl hosted 13 schools and 23 teams, nearly half the amount that was in attendance this year. Dr. Helmer noted several schools were turned away this year.

The tournament was divided up into small, medium and large school divisions. Creighton Prep came out on top in the large school division and Bellevue A East came in second place. York A won the medium school division followed by Fillmore Central A. Finally, Hampton earned the first place award in the small school division with Fullerton B in second place.

The quiz bowl is run each year by the departments of history, geography, and criminal justice. The professors joining Helmer in the event were Tobin Beck assistant professor of global studies, Dr. Matt Phillips, associate professor of history, Dr. John Hink assistant professor of history, Dr. Jamie Hink, instructor of history and Dr. Tim Huntington, associate professor of biology and criminal justice.
