High school honor ensembles perform at Musical Arts Day 2012
High school students from across the country performed in an honor choir and honor band as part of Musical Arts Day, Friday, Oct. 26, on the Concordia campus. The day ended in a concert at the Walz Human Performance Complex arena.
The honor ensembles were made up of 149 students selected by audition. The students spent six hours in rehearsal during Musical Arts Day to learn music and prepare for the evening concert. Members of the University Chamber Choir and University Symphonic Band served as section leaders for the honor groups, helping with rehearsals and performing with the groups at the concert.
The honor choir, made up of 102 voices, performed five selections: “O, Come, Let Us Sing” by Cindy Berry, “Adoramus te” by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, “Go Down Moses” arranged by Mark Hayes, “Katyusha” arranged by Bryan Davies, and “Freedom Train” by Rollo A. Dillworth.
Concordia’s University A Cappella Choir performed two songs as well: “Rejoice Now, Heavenly Hosts” by David von Kampen and “All Creatures of Our God and King” arranged by Anders Edenroth.
The two choirs then combined for “No Time” by Susan Brumfield.
The honor band performed three pieces: “Salute to the Colors” arranged by Andrew Glover, “On A Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” by David R. Holsinger and “The King Across the Water” by Bruce Fraser.
The University Symphonic Band joined in the concert with “Shepherd’s Hey” by Percy Grainger, “The Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitacre and “The Big Cage” arranged by Andrew Glover.
