Gubanyi receives Outstanding Teaching Award

Dr. Joseph Gubanyi, professor of biology, was presented with the 2010 Outstanding Teaching Award at Concordia's commencement on May 8. The honor is given to a full-time faculty member who has been nominated by students and selected by a committee of students and faculty members who have previously received the award. The recipient is not revealed until his or her name is called during the graduation ceremony.
"I teach because I want to embody what is a servant-leader," said Gubanyi. "I don't want to lift myself up; I only want to lift up the one who gives me the opportunity, my Lord and Savior. It is exciting to be a small part to motivate and get students to learn."
Gubanyi stressed that he is one example of the many professors who were nominated. The award recognizes excellence in classroom instruction, commitment to students, scholarship, leadership and service to the university.
In addition to his teaching duties, Gubanyi also serves as the chair for the natural sciences department.
