Devotion: Where Our Treasure Is

Written by Carrie Kober, Concordia University, Nebraska alumna, regional ambassador and mom of a current Concordia student, this reflection captures how faith formed on campus continues to shape lives, families and vocations today.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart is also” (Matt. 6:21).

After one of my presentations about Concordia University, Nebraska at Metro-East Lutheran High School, a student I know well said to me, “I’ve never met anyone that loves their school as much as you do.”  

I know that I am not alone in my love and appreciation for Concordia Nebraska.  Alumni throughout the country tell of their loyalty for their alma mater. 

I think the verse today helps explain why we all think so highly of this place. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

We came here and experienced more than just a college experience.  We came here and had the greatest treasure of our lives – our faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ -  strengthened, renewed, refined and made real in a whole new way.  Our hearts followed in this journey.  As we prepared for our future vocations, we were also being equipped to be leaders in all areas of our lives for service to God and His people. 

When we meet and gather with fellow alumni, there is a bond there rooted in the same saving faith, the same mission, the same purpose.  

What was true for us in the past, is still true today.  As I spoke to my son about his first weeks here at Concordia, I heard stories of Bible studies, chapels and discussions on faith.  This knowledge of what happens on Concordia’s campus is what gives this mom peace as I let my eldest leave to become an adult in this troubled world. Knowing that the treasure of his faith will continue to be strengthened, protected, and grown. 

Keeping the treasure of Jesus Christ as the center of Concordia University is what makes Concordia what it is.  My prayer is that this institution will continue for years to come in living out its mission with truth and purity.

Let us give thanks for the treasure we have been given in Jesus Christ and in his love, forgiveness and life eternal. “For where your treasure is, there your heart is also” (Matt. 6:21).
