Associate Professor of Mathematics Brian Albright recently published his second textbook, “Essentials of Mathematical Statistics.”

Albright began work on the textbook in 2009 and has been using it to teach his Foundations of Statistics class. The textbook combines topics of main-stream elementary statistics books with underlying theory. The book is part of the Jones and Bartlett Learning International Series in Mathematics.

“I wrote this book in much the same way I would lecture the material,” said Albright. “This past semester I did a ‘flipped classroom’ where I recorded short video lectures that covered the essentials of each section. I had students read the book and then watch the video. I did very little lecturing, and most of class time was spent working on problems. I would not do this with any other book.”

The cover of the book was designed by senior art student Micah Hollenbeck of Wheat Ridge, Colo.

Albright, who has taught at Concordia University, Nebraska, since 2004, earned his doctor of science in systems science and mathematics degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. He currently teaches in all areas of mathematics at Concordia including Algebra, Calculus and Statistics.

Senior Micah Hollenbeck designed the cover for the book.
