Concordia music students present holiday concerts

The campus of Concordia was filled with music this December as multiple ensembles entertained audiences with jazz, classical music and traditional Christmas music.

The Concordia jazz band, conducted by assistant professor of music Andrew Schultz, and the jazz choir, conducted by professor of music Dr. Kurt von Kampen, hosted JazzFest, Friday, Dec. 10 in the Weller Hall auditorium. The concert also featured guest artist Jevin Hunter on drums and adjunct professor Wendy Schultz on trombone.

On Sunday, Dec. 12, it was the Concordia handbell choirs’ turn to entertain.  Handbell and Handbell II choirs' program included a mix of traditional and contemporary Christmas songs such as “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Fum, Fum, Fum,” and a new arrangement of “Carol of the Bells,” among others.

Handbell concert audiences were treated not only to the sounds of bells, but also to a visual performance according to conductor Jessica Kite, adjunct professor of music. “Ringing requires a variety of techniques and coordination. It is exciting not only to hear the music, but to see the performers as they take on the challenges required by the pieces that we perform,” said Kite. “Of course, it is also a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of Jesus through God's gift of music!”

The University-Community band rounded out Concordia's December concerts Tuesday, Dec. 14, in Weller auditorium. The band, under the direction of Tim Ruegg, shared well-loved Christmas songs.
