Concordia music groups present December concerts

Four Concordia music ensembles shared vocal and instrumental music throughout the month of December. Audiences experienced jazz, classical and Christmas music performed at three concerts, all of which were free and open to the public.

The Concordia jazz choir, conducted by Professor of Music Dr. Kurt von Kampen, joined the jazz band, under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music Andrew Schultz, in concert on Friday, Dec. 9, in the Weller Hall auditorium.

On Sunday, Dec. 11, audiences heard the Concordia Handbell Choir and Handbell Choir II in concert at the recital hall in the Music Center. These choirs performed pieces that illustrated the appearance of the angel Gabriel and the familiar melodies of “Ding Dong Merrily on High,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “French Carol.” Audience members also had the chance to try out the bells following the performance.

Audiences heard the University-Community Band on Monday, Dec. 12, in the Weller Hall auditorium. “The band provides a unique opportunity for rich interaction between varying ages and levels of experience,” said Tim Ruegg, conductor of the band. The program included holiday classics such as “God Rest You Merry Gentlemen” and “Sleigh Ride.” The audience was invited to enjoy Christmas treats in the lobby following the concert.
