Concordia joins the Giving Tuesday movement

Concordia joined more than 6,500 organizations to participate in Giving Tuesday, observed Tuesday, Dec. 3. Giving Tuesday, or #GivingTuesday as the social media savvy refer to it, is intended to celebrate giving and giving back.

The day is a reaction, in part, to the encroachment of consumerism--days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday emphasizing shopping, for example--during what has traditionally been a time of thankfulness, giving and charity.

“Concordia is pleased to be part of and support #GivingTuesday,” Kurth Brashear, associate vice president for institutional advancement, said.

Concordia has focused its Giving Tuesday efforts on raising money for student scholarships. With more than 99 percent of Concordia students receiving financial aid, it's a need that widely impacts those attending the university.

“Concordia students graduate prepared to serve and lead in the church and world, sharing their talent and faith with others. It’s a natural fit that Concordia’s friends can help these students prepare to give back by serving others through scholarship gifts on #GivingTuesday," Brashear said.

Serving as an opening day to the giving season, Giving Tuesday was born out of the social media platforms of Facebook and Twitter. Individuals and entities observing the day’s intention of celebrating philanthropy use the #GivingTuesday hashtag, a social media device allowing people to follow a conversation.
