Concordia University, Nebraska hosted the 31st annual Concordia Deaconess Conference, Wednesday, June 15 to Saturday, June 18. This year’s theme was “Lutheran Spirituality: The Life of Receptivity.” More than seventy deaconesses attended, including two who made the trip from South Africa. Although the conference is focused on Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod rostered deaconesses and women training to be deaconesses, the public also is invited to attend.

“Each year we hold a three-day conference with presentations related to deaconess work, Bible study and worship. It is an opportunity to connect with other deaconesses in synod,” said Lorraine Groth, logistics chairperson.

The conference featured presentations by Dr. Joseph Herl, associate professor of music at Concordia University Nebraska, and Bible studies by Rev. William Weedon, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hamel, Ill.

Dr. Charles Blanco, assistant professor of theology at Concordia, was the keynote speaker at the banquet on Friday evening.  Deaconess Dorothy Krans, manager of social ministry organizations for LCMS World Relief and Human Care, gave presentations on social-service opportunities and changes in the synod’s structure.

Participants also had an opportunity to choose from a number of breakout sessions including a tour of the Center for Liturgical Art, housed on the university campus; a presentation about Operation Barnabas, an initiative of the synod’s ministry to the armed forces, and a presentation on Sabbath Rest, about making time for oneself.
