Concordia holds 106th commencement Saturday, May 11

The speaker for the ceremony was Dr. Douglas Tewes, orthopedic surgeon and director of sports medicine at Lincoln Orthopedic Center. Tewes also received the honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Concordia.

In addition to Tewes, six other individuals received honorary degrees and awards during commencement. Those receiving the honors were James P. Brown, Sr., the Doctor of Letters Degree; William Hartmann and Grace Hughey, Crest of Christ Awards;  Wilbert Rusch, Jr., the Master Educator Award; and Thom and Joani Schultz, the Distinguished Service Award.

Concordia alumni celebrating the 50th anniversary of their graduation year also were recognized.

On Friday, May 10, a baccalaureate service was held at at St. John Lutheran Church. Rev. Mark Barz, pastor at Crown of Life Lutheran Church in San Antonio, Texas, served as preacher. The liturgist was Rev. Ryan Matthias, campus pastor at Concordia University, Nebraska.

Music for the ceremony was provided by Concordia Professor of Music Dr. Jeffrey Blersch; the University A Cappella Choir, conducted by Professor of Music Dr. Kurt von Kampen; and the Concordia Brass Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Wendy Schultz.
