You could hear the kings go off to war as Concordia's Symphonic Band and University-Community Band hosted a joint concert Oct. 22 at the Seward High School auditorium.

Some of the featured pieces performed include "In the Spring, At the Time When Kings Go Off to War," by David Holsinger, "Spoon River," by Percy Grainger and "In Heaven's Air," by Samuel Hazo.

Holsinger's composition, which is based on 1 Chronicles 20:1-3, is the hardest piece the bands perform according to Andrew Schultz, director of the Symphonic Band.

"The conceptual, artistic and technical challenges of this piece present a fantastic challenge for the ensemble," said Schultz. "Each member of the ensemble is challenged on both an individual level in order to perform their own part, but also as an ensemble to work together to present this depiction of King David's army assault on the cities of the Ammonites."

Led by Tim Ruegg, the University-Community Band is open to members of the community and Concordia students and faculty members. The two bands combined to perform several selections.
