Both Concordia’s Symphonic Band and University-Community Band entertained audiences on Friday, Oct. 21, in the Seward High School auditorium. The public was welcome to attend.

The University Symphonic Band, Concordia’s premier concert band, presented two pieces by composer Samuel Hazo, “Rush” and “A Southern Hymn,”

“‘Rush’ is a highly energetic and rhythmic work that has hints of influences from rock and jazz musical styles,” said Schultz. “‘A Southern Hymn’ is a broad and sweeping work that is meant to reflect on the heritage of American folk music.”

The audience also heard two pieces from the first part of the twentieth-century, “His Honor,” a march by Henry Fillmore, and “Watermelon Club” by Jens Bodewalt Lampe.

Led by Tim Ruegg, the University-Community Band is open to members of the community and to Concordia students and faculty members. The two bands combined to perform several selections.
