Concordia University, Nebraska conferred the largest number of graduate degrees, 116, in its history during its 104th commencement on May 7. This included the inaugural master’s degree recipients in Concordia’s business administration and gerontology programs. A total of three hundred and thirty-five undergraduate and graduate degrees, diplomas, and certificates were awarded.

Alumni class members of 1961, celebrating their golden reunion, led the processional in the Walz Human Performance Complex.

This year’s commencement address was given by President Emeritus Orville Walz. Walz charged the graduates to be optimistic, flexible in their future plans and to look for God in everything they do in life. “As you map out your future, do it in pencil,” said Walz. “Strategic, long-term plans are fine, but keep them flexible. Avoid the use of the word never.”

Dr. Thaddeus Warren, associate professor of education, was presented with the 2011 Outstanding Teaching Award. The honor is given annually to a full-time faculty member who has been nominated by students and selected by a committee of students and faculty members who have previously received the award.

Six individuals were recognized with honorary degrees and awards at commencement. Those recipients include David Sommermeyer, Fort Wayne, Ind., Doctor of Laws; Dr. Sandra Hodges, Omaha, Neb., Doctor of Letters; Allen Loesel, St. Charles, Mo., Master Educator; Richard Buethe, Lincoln, Neb., Crest of Christ Award; William and Leona Kernen, Omaha, Neb., Crest of Christ Award; and Roger Glawatz, Seward, Neb., Distinguished Service Award.
