Big band sounds part of joint concert
Classic band sounds were in the air as Concordia University, Nebraska’s Symphonic Band and University-Community Band hosted a joint concert Friday, Feb. 18, in the Seward High School auditorium.
A highlight of the evening was a performance of “American Overture for Band” by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins. The piece was composed in 1953 for the United States Army field band. The audience also enjoyed Henry Gass’s “A Tribute to Glenn Miller,” a medley showcasing the work of Glenn Miller, one of the most popular musicians of the swing band era.
The University-Community band, conducted by Tim Ruegg, brings together members of the Seward community and Concordia students who share a love of music. Concordia freshman flautist, Erin Wineman, Walton, Neb., joined the band to continue playing her flute without the time commitment of being part of a collegiate ensemble.
“Though I’m not music major or minor, I greatly enjoy the friendships built when playing in a band,” said Wineman.
