Janzow Favorites

Janzow Dining Hall...ah, what a place. The memories and feelings it can evoke for some of us are almost unexplainable. Maybe Janzow is where you first met your friend group when you were but a wee freshman. Maybe it’s where you went for pancakes after the Christmas tree lighting outside of Weller last year (guys! Go to that! It was the most fun night of my life thus far!).

Anyway, I hear people bashing Janzow a whole lot, and honestly, I might be pretty easy to please given that I eat largely the same foods at the same times every day – my roommate can attest to my consistency with having a cup of tea with the same brand of animal crackers as a snack pretty much every night – but I am a Janzow fan. And you're about to hear why. So at long last, because I know you all were on the edge of your seats waiting to hear this, here is my list of (my) Janzow Favorites.

The granola

It’s back, and it’s better than ever. Yes, I’m aware it’s just Nature Valley granola. Yes, I’m aware that I can buy it at Walmart. But why would I do that when I have access to a never-ending supply of the stuff in Janzow (at least most of the time)? This granola has to take first place on my list. It’s the perfect amount of crunchy, the perfect amount of sweet, and is a staple on yogurt, as cereal, or even as an ice cream topping.

Mac and cheese

Mac and cheese...you never fail me. Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve had a lot of subpar mac and cheese in my lifetime, but Janzow’s version of this super-nostalgic dish is, to me, simply amazing. It’s creamy, cheesy, and *usually* nice and warm. Plus, mac and cheese is like your average pasta dish, but even better, because it involves more cheese.

Orange chicken

It comes in all shapes and sizes (including the chicken nugget shape), but the orange chicken in Janzow has a surprisingly consistent flavor, which means that you can count on it being pretty good. I’m usually one of those people in Janzow who has to survey all my available options before I commit to eating any one thing, but when there’s orange chicken in the hot food line...you’d better believe that I’m heading straight there.

Honeydew melon

Imagine my joy when I, as a first-day Concordia freshman and avid consumer of honeydew melon, walked into Janzow for breakfast and saw an entire dish of honeydew cubes just sitting in the salad bar. I believe that I have eaten it at every Janzow breakfast I’ve had, which, as a student in my third semester of college, is quite a few. I do wonder, though, whether the number of melons I’ve eaten here would make me like one of those people you read about in math problems...

Oatmeal

I am oatmeal’s biggest fan, and Janzow does oatmeal really well. It’s getting to that time of year when they’ve started to offer it every day at breakfast, and when I tell you I’m excited, I’m excited. I will eat oatmeal every day if given the chance – like I said, I’m easy to please. There are just so many things you can do with it. Personally, I prefer my oatmeal with a little yogurt mixed in. It makes it extra creamy and adds a little flavor. Sometimes, I’ll even add raisins or Craisins on top (if I’m feeling fancy).

The salad bar

Last but not least on my Janzow Favorites list is my go-to meal option when nothing else strikes my fancy. The salad bar is the ultimate option for a little bit of “girl dinner,” because you really can throw anything you want from it on a plate and call it a day. Vegetables? Obviously. Protein? The grilled chicken is the best. Carbs? Just wait until you try the croutons. Dairy? I mean, cheese. Need I say more?

It’s currently 4:45 p.m. on a Monday. I'm giving credit to the fact that I’m going to eat dinner with my friends in half an hour for my ability to write this blog in less than an hour, because I’m hungry! Hmmm...maybe Janzow will have mac and cheese this evening.
