Grabbing Dinner in Janzow

Usually, it’s between 5:30 and 6 when I make my way over to Janzow for dinner. Some days, I’m coming from my job at the daycare and others I’m coming from my apartment.

I go in and head straight for the hot food line. There’s always a few vegetable options, and a couple of hot meals to choose from. Usually, there’s one that’s a clear favorite, but today I had a trickier choice before me. Today, I chose the battered cod over the pulled pork, and got corn and rice on the side.

Heading to my seat, I go past the salads. There’s always an assortment of different salads that students can choose from. Normally, I would go with the romaine salad, but today, I chose the spinach salad.

Across from the salad table are the desserts. There is always an assortment of cookies, such as chocolate chip, s'mores and many more exciting flavors. Today, they also had strawberry jell-o cake and chocolate cake. Next to the desserts are some healthier options. There’s yogurt, small containers of granola, potato salad, cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs, and cucumbers. After I finish what I’ve gotten already, I’ll be back for potato salad.

When I eat in Janzow, I almost always sit at the table closest to where people come in. It’s interesting to see people come in from that table. I don’t know everyone, but for the most part, people sit with the same group of friends. On this particular day, I saw a friend who came and ate with me, but most days, I’ll wave at people I know and they’ll go eat with their friend group.

As far as other options for dinner go, there is always the sandwich line. Students can get sandwiches or wraps with different meat, cheese, vegetables, and dressings. I haven’t had this for a while, but my favorite is chicken salad and cheddar cheese on a toasted croissant. Today, the special in the sandwich line was tuna salad. I may have gotten it if I hadn’t been so full already.

Next to the sandwich line, there’s always one or two soup options, today’s being tomato basil soup.

On the other side of the cafeteria is the pasta and pizza line. Today, there is a garden vegetable pasta and a pasta with marinara sauce. In the pizza line, there is cheese, pepperoni, and green pepper pizza.

After I finish my meal, I throw away my trash and put my dishes on the conveyor belt that brings them back to be washed. On this particular day, I go with the friend I ate dinner with to Dairy Queen, but most days I just walk back to my apartment.
