University A Cappella Choir

Concordia University’s internationally acclaimed A Cappella Choir has enjoyed a long tradition of fine choral singing since its inception in 1939. As one of three auditioned vocal ensembles at Concordia, the choir’s membership consists of both music majors and students from other disciplines. Many choir members receive private vocal instruction from Concordia’s voice faculty. Rehearsals are held five days per week for one hour. The choir has a rich history of touring, making annual trips throughout the United States and abroad.

In summer 2001, the choir toured Australia and was awarded a gold medal at the Australian International Music Festival. In summer 2005, the choir traveled to Europe for a 24-day concert tour of Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Italy. As a part of this tour, the choir was selected to represent the United States at the prestigious 42nd Annual International Choral Competition in Spittal an der Drau in Austria. Eleven choirs from around the world competed in the four-day event, and Concordia’s choir placed third overall, earning a spot in the winner’s circle on the final evening of the event.

In the fall of 2005 and 2006, the A Cappella Choir was invited to perform with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra in the recently completed Holland Center for the Performing Arts. Works performed by the choir include Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. Other major works performed by the A Cappella Choir in recent years include Requiem by Hecter Berlioz, Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein, and Vesperae Solennes de Confessore (K. 339) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The choir has recorded three compact discs and anticipates a fourth release in the fall of 2007. The most recent recording, The Light of Morning, features music from the 2005–06 performance seasons.

The University A Cappella Choir seeks to honor God through its singing and performs literature from the entire spectrum of sacred and secular choral music. By striving to perform at the highest artistic level, the singers attempt to give back to God a small portion of the gifts He gives, the most important of which is the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
