Hometown: Seward, Neb.
Alma Mater: Wayne State College
Todd LaVelle was named Concordia University head softball coach on June 13, 2013. He completed his fourth season as a Bulldog in 2017. Officially, LaVelle began his duties as head softball coach on July 8, 2013.
LaVelle led the program to new heights in year one as the Bulldogs made their first-ever appearance at the NAIA national championships. He then took the Bulldogs back to the national tournament in 2015. The 2014 squad went 32-16 overall (fourth most wins in school history), placed third in the GPAC during the regular season and finished runner up at the conference tournament. The breakthrough campaign included signature wins over fellow national qualifying teams Bellevue, conference champion Morningside and then No. 10 Olivet Nazarene.
The 2017 team set a new LaVelle-era best with 34 wins (tied for the second most in school history) during a season that included a second place GPAC finish. For the first time during LaVelle's tenure, Concordia placed three players on the All-GPAC first team: Leah Kalkwarf, Megan Ruppert and Michaela Woodward. A star two-way player, Woodward broke a single-season school record with 11 home runs in 2017.
At 125-71 over the past four seasons, LaVelle has overseen the winningest four-year stretch in program history. In 2015 Concordia won the GPAC tournament for the first time since 2007 and recorded the program's first-ever national tournament victory - a 6-4 win over Grand View University. LaVelle has now coached three of the program's seven 30-win teams all-time.
LaVelle, a Seward native and Wayne State College (Neb.) graduate, brought an impressive track record of excellence on the Nebraska prep scene prior to his arrival at Concordia. As head softball coach at Lincoln North Star from 2005 to 2013, LaVelle amassed a mark of 171-91 with three state tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2009.
The Seward High School graduate began his coaching career in 1993 when he started as a summer select softball coach, a role he continued to hold until accepting the offer to become head coach at Concordia. LaVelle has coached more than 50 summer select teams over the last 20 years, producing more than 1,500 wins and 12 Amateur Softball Association softball state championship appearances.
An experienced educator, LaVelle has also served as either a head or assistant coach in the sports of baseball, basketball, football, track and field and wrestling while spending time at Humphrey Public School, Seward Public School, Humphrey Saint Francis School and Pender Public School, in addition to Lincoln North Star.
LaVelle’s expertise at the high school level was recognized when he was chosen to be the head coach of the 2008 Nebraska high school softball all-star game.
LaVelle spent 17 years as an area teacher, alongside his coaching roles. He has worked in the field of physical education, having taught all levels from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Lavelle received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Wayne State (1994).
He resides in Seward with his wife Mindy. They have a son Pat, daughter Whitney and a son Broc.
