The link between physical activity and emotional health

We know that physical exercise can improve our physical body, helping us lose weight, build muscle, and keep our heart healthy. What we sometimes forget is that physical activity impacts our emotional health as well. During this time of COVID-19 and spending more time at home, it’s still important to get your 30 minutes a day of exercise, whatever that may look like.

Exercise helps our brain release the feel good chemical called endorphins. Endorphins help us to feel relaxed and improve our moods. I know that I always feel better after I get outside and take a walk around town. Getting your heart rate up helps to decrease anxiety and depression, plus it makes us feel better and improves our self-esteem.

It’s important to find exercise that you like and enjoy. Now is a great time to try a new kind of exercise. Maybe you have always wanted to try yoga or CrossFit. There are so many great, free resources out there for you to try. Here are just a few examples that were shared from Dr. Nolan Harms:

  • The Yoga for Beginners app has some simple and short yoga sequences to use.
  • POPSugar Fitness has a lot to choose from on YouTube.

If you want to track your fitness or have a new exercise plan, you can try some of these apps:

  • FitBod (for iOS systems only)
  • JEFIT
  • MyFitnessPal

What’s most important is that you get up and move. Increase that heart rate and try a new exercise routine. It’s good for the mind, body and soul!
