About the Institute for Rural and Small-Town Ministries
Rooted in Concordia University, Nebraska’s mission, the Institute for Rural and Small-Town Ministries exists to support and strengthen the unique ministry of rural and small-town churches and schools. These communities are essential to the fabric of American life and the mission of the church.
The Institute serves as a resource hub for current and future church workers, offering training, encouragement and support that speaks directly to the needs of those serving in less-populated settings.
Why Rural and Small-Town Ministries Matter
The United States Census Bureau defines rural communities as those with populations of less than 2,500. The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod has a strong heritage of churches and elementary schools serving rural and small-town communities. However, many of the rural and small-town schools have closed, although a small number continue to educationally serve their communities, and some preschools have opened in these smaller locales.
Many of the churches that serve these communities are small. Still, rural and small-town people are being blessed by hearing God’s Word, receiving His sacraments. They and their pastors faithfully serve their communities with relationship-focused care.
While often overlooked, rural and small-town congregations are where many people experience God’s Word, grace and community. These churches are vital outposts of the Gospel, and they need leaders who understand their rhythms, joys and opportunities.
Concordia University, Nebraska is uniquely positioned to champion these ministries. With deep roots in the rural Midwest and a long-standing tradition of church work preparation, Concordia trains students to faithfully serve wherever God calls.
