Teaching and geography are two of the oldest subjects around, but mix in a bit of Internet goodness like blogging, and you've got something on the cutting edge. This fall Dr. Joel Helmer, associate professor of geography at Concordia University, Nebraska, and senior education student Nick Bloch, Lincoln, Neb., co-authored “Teaching Geography in the Blogosphere," exploring blog use in classrooms and its usefulness in geography education. Their article provides a blogging case study from an introductory geography course at Concordia.

The article shows teachers how blogs can be used to teach geography and also includes information on how to adapt those techniques to other classroom disciplines.

Bloch became involved in the writing process while taking an independent study course on geographic education with Helmer. Helmer thought that writing an education article and submitting it for publication would be a good learning exercise for Bloch.

“Teaching Geography in the Blogosphere” was published in the October 2010 edition of The Geography Teacher.
