Concordia Vocal Jazz and the University Symphonic Band of Concordia both will make repeat appearances at the annual Nebraska Music Educators Conference in Lincoln. The performances, open to the public in addition to conference attendees, are part of a three-day schedule of presentations, clinics and activities meant to instruct and motivate Nebraska teachers and students of music.
"To be selected to perform for this state conference is a great honor," said band director Andrew Schultz.
The band has been asked to participate once before at an NMEA conference, and the choir has performed three times for the NMEA. NMEA judges select conference performers from audition tapes sent in from bands and choirs of various levels, elementary through college.
The Concordia Vocal Jazz Choir will sing five pieces on Thursday, Nov. 19, beginning at 4 p.m. at St. Paul Methodist Church (12th & M Streets, Lincoln). The concert is free and open to the public. The group's program includes “Chili Con Carne,” “Georgia On My Mind,” “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," “How High the Moon,” and the signature song of the Vocal Jazz Choir, “Mack the Knife.”
"I tried to choose pieces that would show off the strengths of this group and appeal to students and teachers at the conference," explained Dr. Kurt von Kampen, choir director. "They are very different in terms of sound, style and tempo."
The University Symphonic Band, Concordia's premier concert band, also will take the stage on Thursday. It is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Lied Center. "The Ascension," "October," "Chorale and Shaker Dance," "Solas Ane," "National Emblem March," and "El Relicario" will be on its program. The concert is free and open to the public.
