No. 22 Concordia University earned an 80-63 women's basketball win over Mount Mercy College on Saturday afternoon in Sioux City. Concordia improved to 3-0 on the young season with the win, while Mount Mercy dropped to 1-2 on the year with the loss.
Mount Mercy led by as many as nine early in the first half, but Concordia rallied to trail by just one at 34-33 at halftime. Concordia quickly claimed the lead in the second half and used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to take a 70-52 lead. The Bulldogs led by as many as 20 down the stretch and settled for the 17-point win.
Concordia hit 25-of-59 shots in the game for 42.4 percent. The Bulldogs were 7-of-25 from the three point line for 28 percent and 23-of-31 on free throws for 74.2 percent. Mount Mercy connected on 23-of-60 shots in the game for 38.3 percent. The Mustangs were 6-of-29 from the three point line for 20.7 percent and 11-of-16 on free throws for 68.8 percent. Concordia held a 40-36 rebounding advantage in the contest.
Stacy Scheer had a game-high 19 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs offensively. Scheer also added six rebounds and four assists. Freshman Katie Rich had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Kathryn Ommen also had 14 points. Treva Nutter added 12 points and four assists in a balanced offensive attack for the Bulldogs.
Shanda Novak had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs in the loss. Emily Greiner scored 10 points and was the only other player to reach double figures for Mount Mercy.
Concordia returns to action with a 3 p.m. contest at Briar Cliff on Sunday.
