The Concordia University track team made its annual trek to Vermillion, S.D., to take part in Saturday's Graphic Edge Invite hosted by the University of South Dakota.
The women began the day with a strong showing from Bethany Sutton in the 800-meter run. She finished third with a time of 2:21.95. In the 4-by-400 meter relay, the Concordia women's "A" relay team finished second with a time of 4:07.01, just behind the host Coyotes. In field events, Charista Zehnder continued to do well in the long jump. Her distance of 17'4" won the event. Lauren Eickmeyer finished fourth in the shot put, throwing 40'9.75"
For the Bulldog men, All-American and NAIA National Champion Michael Saalfeld began the day dominating the 800-meter run with a winning time of 1:54.16, almost two full seconds in front of the second place runner. Zach Meineke also had an impressive performance for the Bulldogs in the 5000-meter run. His time of 15:03.24 beat the second place runner from Morningside by 30 seconds. In field events the Bulldog men claimed victories in the pole vault and shot put while picking up third place finishes in the triple jump and weight throw. Josh Tonniges easily won the pole vault, clearing a height of 15'6", and Jordan Hinrichs won the shot put, throwing 52'11.5". Hinrichs also placed third in the weight throw with a distance of 51'11.25". Drew Rodine competed for the first time this season in the triple jump and took third with a mark of 45'10.5".
Concordia will next be in action Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Nicely Invite hosted by Doane College in Crete, Neb.
