Concordia University, Nebraska men's basketball coach Grant Schmidt announced that Tyler Byrd of Bennington High School will play basketball for the Bulldogs beginning next season. "Tyler will bring so many great things to our program," said Schmidt. "He possesses the athleticism and leadership you look for in a point guard. His background as a quarterback in football translates well to his leadership on the court. His basketball IQ as well as his work ethic will allow him to step in and contribute immediately."
A four-year letter winner at Bennington, Byrd was named all-conference second team as a junior. A two-sport athlete for the Badgers he was also an all-state and all-conference player in football. He was named to first team all-district, first team all-Omaha area, and first team all-state as a quarterback.
As the starting point guard for the Badgers, Byrd helped lead them to an impressive 23-0 record and birth in the Class C Nebraska State Championship Tournament.
"Tyler's personality on and off the court will mesh so well with the guys we have that he is a perfect fit for us right now," Schmidt added. "(Byrd) is so well rounded with the type of person he is in the classroom and on the court I'm very excited to have him join our program."
Byrd's resume in the classroom is as impressive as his abilities on the court. He has been on the honor roll each year and carries a 4.0 grade point average. Byrd is a two-time academic all-state selection by the NSAA.
