The 8th-ranked Concordia University women's basketball team dropped a tough 74-68 loss to the 3rd-ranked Morningside College Mustangs Saturday afternoon before a bleacher-packed Doghouse.
An estimated 1,200 fans watched the Bulldogs outmuscle and outwork the Mustangs to jump ahead by as many as eight points before Morningside was able to cut the Concordia lead to 37-34 at the half.
The second half began looking much like the first half as the Bulldogs jumped out to an eight point lead, 45-37, with 16:45 remaining. The Mustangs then went on a 9-0 run to take the lead at 46-45. The two teams traded baskets until, with five minutes remaining, the Bulldogs went cold from the free throw line and the Mustangs were able to take the lead for good at 58-54.
The Bulldogs outrebounded the Mustangs 50-36 in the game but Concordia's three-point shooting went an ice-cold 0-11 in the second half.
Concordia was led offensively by Whitney Stichka with 14 points, while Melissa Tinkham and Stacey Sheer added 13 points. TaLisa Krejci led the Bulldogs on the glass with nine rebounds.
Morningside was led by Roni Miller with 16 points while J.J. Miller added 15 points for the Mustangs.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 21-3 and 10-3 in the GPAC but Concordia held on their hold of third place in the conference. Morningside moves to 22-2 and 10-0 in the GPAC.
Concordia will next be in action Tuesday night as they head to Fremont, Neb. to take on the Midland Lutheran College Warriors at 5:30 p.m.
