Game/event days on campus: Concordia Athletics continues to welcome fans to its venues for sporting events. Currently, there are no attendance limits. Before visiting road venues involving Bulldog teams, fans should be sure to check the spectator policies on those particular campuses. Other locations may require the use of face coverings. Once again, fans attending varsity sporting events at Concordia are able to purchase advance tickets online via HomeTown Ticketing. Tickets will also be sold on site on the day of events. Should any policies or protocols for fans change, updated information will be available on the athletics fan information page HERE.

Small school Schutte’s big-time game worthy of national attention: He may have come from small Class DI Laurel-Concord-Coleridge High School, but Noah Schutte’s game was too big to ignore. After piling up more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds as a prep, Schutte chose Concordia as his college destination. Schutte flourished this past season while serving as a major reason why the Bulldogs reached incredible heights in one of the greatest campaigns in program history. For more on Schutte’s growth, click HERE.

Winter sports rewind: The winter sports season of 2021-22 saw Concordia teams again make waves while continuing to carry out the mission and vision of Bulldog Athletics. Most notable from a sheer results standpoint were the GPAC championships captured by the Men’s Basketball and Women’s Track & Field teams. Those two programs also experienced success on the national stage as Women’s Track came home with a third-place national trophy and Men’s Basketball made a run to the NAIA national quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Women’s Basketball qualified for the national tournament and Wrestling sent two athletes to the nationals. For a complete breakdown of the winter sports season, click HERE. Track & Field

·        The first full-scale meet of the 2022 outdoor season came last week as the Bulldogs filled up all event areas at the Central Nebraska Challenge (April 2) co-hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Hastings. The results for Concordia included seven automatic national qualifying standards and another three marks that met the threshold for the ‘B’ standard. A week earlier, the Bulldogs spread out between the Grand View Viking Relays and the Doane Icebreaker Throws Meet. The schedule will ramp up significantly in the month of April for Head Coach Matt Beisel’s squads. For more information on Concordia Track & Field, click HERE.

·        The NAIA auto marks were turned in last week by Morgan De Jong (hammer throw), Sara Huss (discus), Sarah Lewis (400 meter hurdles), Erin Mapson (pole vault), Josie Puelz (pole vault), Sarah Ragland (hammer throw) and Chris Wren (hammer throw). Most of those athletes qualified for the 2021 national championships in those same events, with the exception of De Jong in the hammer (she qualified in the discus). Among the newly qualified athletes, Huss, Lewis, Mapson, Puelz and Ragland are returning All-Americans from a year ago. Puelz celebrated her third career pole vault national title this past indoor season.

·        Below is a listing of marks produced by Bulldogs that have been reported to the national leaderboard. The 2022 outdoor season tally to date includes seven ‘A’ standards and four ‘B’ standards.

o   Jordyn Anderson – B, shot put (43’ 5 ¼”)

o   Morgan De Jong – A, hammer (173’ 3”)

o   Mackenzie Ferrel – B, hammer (164’ 4”)

o   Rylee Haecker – B, 1,500 meters (4:42.36)

o   Sara Huss – A, discus (151’)

o   Jordan Koepke – B, 400 hurdles (1:04.34)

o   Sarah Lewis – A, 400 hurdles (1:02.70)

o   Erin Mapson – A, pole vault (11’ 11 ¾”)

o   Josie Puelz – A, pole vault (12’ 7 ½”)

o   Sarah Ragland – A, hammer (166’ 4”)

o   Chris Wren – A, hammer (185’ 6”)

·        Leading the way on the track last week, Lewis locked up a spot at nationals while clocking in at 1:02.70 in the 400 meter hurdles. A series of ‘B’ standard qualifying times were also turned in thanks to the work of Rylee Haecker in the 1,500 meters (4:42.36) and Jordan Koepke in the 400 hurdles (1:04.34). Also in the 1,500 meter race, Kylahn Heritage finished just behind Haecker with a time of 4:45.42. Both Haecker and Heritage have their eyes on qualifying for nationals in the 1,500. On the men’s side of the 400 meters, Xavier Ross (49.16) and Jacob Jennings (49.93) came in under 50 seconds. Rachel Battershell (57.74) and Trinity Tuls (59.46) both ran the 400 in under a minute.

·        To close the meet in Kearney, Neb., the Bulldogs got solid performances in the 5,000 meters as both Grace Reiman (19:33.29) and Camden Sesna (15:02.66) placed second in their respective races. Calvin Rohde trailed just behind Sesna and crossed the finish in 15:12.86. Sesna’s time was a personal best by more than 30 seconds and was the fifth fastest in program history. Not previously mentioned top three placements on the track came from Joel Rathe (third in the 100 meters) and Cade Kleckner (third in the 200 meters).

·        It was an active day for Cora Olson, who placed sixth in the 200 meters and eighth in the long jump and ran a leg for the 4x100 meter relay that clocked in at 48.42. That particular relay also included Battershell, Brittney Aitken and Lewis. On the men’s side of the 4x1, Kleckner, Rathe, Jennings and Colton Meyer finished in 45.04. Beisel believes both 4x1s have the ability to attain national qualifying times in the future. Concordia entered one 4x4 into the meet. The quartet of Keri Bauer, Tuls, Jenna Esch and Lainey Werts finished in 4:03.32. Bauer also ran a PR time of 2:17.24 in the 800 meters.

·        Up next is the first of two home meets on the 2022 outdoor schedule. The Bulldogs will host the Concordia Invite this Friday and Saturday. Day one of the meet will feature only the hammer and javelin throws before the bulk of the action kicks into gear on day two. The tentative meet schedule can be found HERE. Concordia will also host the Twilight Meet on May 13. Throughout the month of April, the Bulldogs will be back in Kearney for a meet and will compete at Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan while select athletes will be at the prestigious Drake Relays (April 28-30).

Tennis

·        It was a busy stretch Thursday through Saturday of last week as the men were in action each of those three days and the women played twice. Collectively, the Bulldogs were a perfect 5-0. The men’s team collected wins over Mount Marty, 6-1, Central College (Iowa), 7-0, and Northwestern, 6-1. Meanwhile, the women defeated Mount Marty, 7-0, and Northwestern, 5-2. Head Coach Cam Long’s men’s team has won four matches in a row to improve to 6-6 overall (3-0 GPAC) and the women have bumped their record to 4-7 overall (2-1 GPAC) on the strength of back-to-back league victories. For more information on Concordia Tennis, click here: MEN | WOMEN.

·        The success within conference play is a continuation of last season for the Bulldog men, who have now won eight of their last nine GPAC regular season matches. During that run, the only team to defeat Concordia is reigning GPAC champion Midland, who is again the favorite within the conference. The Bulldogs will likely have to go through the Warriors if they are to reach the national tournament for the first time in program history. Midland owns a 10-match win streak within conference regular season action.

·        This past week was the most dominant one yet for the Concordia men. They combined to 16-2 in singles and 9-0 in doubles. In singles action, three Bulldogs were a perfect 3-0 last week: Joe Bindl, Shawn Springer and Juan Rabellino. Bindl also went 3-0 in doubles while pairing up with three different teammates. Long actually used seven different doubles combinations last week with spotless results. In the white washing of Mount Marty, Concordia won all three doubles decisions by 6-0 scores.

·        On the season, the men’s team is a combined 38-34 (.528) in singles and 23-13 (.639) in doubles. From a results standpoint, the top doubles combos for the Bulldogs have been Eduardo Luzzi and Rabellino (6-2) and Berryman and Bindl (6-2). In singles competition, Isaac Howes is the lone Concordia player to have appeared in all 12 matches. He’s now 6-6 this season. Five other Bulldogs have at least four singles wins this season: Springer (5-5), Bindl (5-6), Berryman (4-2), Rabellino (4-3) and Jack Kitson (4-4).

·        The women’s team effectively bounced back from their 6-1 loss at Morningside on March 26 while winning twice within the conference last week. Combined in the wins over Mount Marty and Northwestern, the Bulldogs went 10-2 in singles and 6-0 in doubles. At the top of the lineup, Sofia Morales moved her singles record within GPAC play to 3-0. Morales went 2-0 last week in singles – so too did Tessa Blough, Kylie Freudenburg and Megan Hakes. In doubles, Long used five different combinations. At No. 1, Morales and Blough went 2-0 last week.

·        Cumulatively this season, the Concordia women are 27-39 (.409) in singles and 13-20 (.394) in doubles. The Bulldogs have been better within the GPAC – 11-7 in singles and 6-3 in doubles. Morales paces the squad with six singles wins. She’s also won three times in doubles. Next in line with the most singles wins are Hakes (4-3) and Blough (4-7). Concordia’s lineup is largely different from the one that pushed the program into a share of the 2021 GPAC regular season title. The frontrunners so far at the top of the 2022 standings are Midland (3-0 GPAC) and Doane (2-0 GPAC).

·        It will be another week chalk full of action. On the women’s side, the Bulldogs are preparing to host College of Saint Mary at 5 p.m. CT on Tuesday before traveling to play Hastings at 3 p.m. on Wednesday and then finally coming back home to host Midland at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The men’s schedule is the same on Wednesday and Saturday. By the close of this week, Concordia will have only one GPAC match remaining in the regular season.

Golf

·        The spring seasons are now well underway for both the men’s and women’s teams. This past weekend, the men put together a solid two-day run at the Bethel College Spring Invitational and placed third out of 10 teams. As of Tuesday (April 5) morning, the women’s team had begun action at their own Concordia Bulldog Invitational, which will continue with round two on Wednesday. The women got their spring season started last week at the Moundbuilder Spring Classic (March 28-29). For more information on the Concordia Golf programs, click here: MEN | WOMEN.

·        At the Moundbuilder Classic, the women’s team carded a score of 353-365–718 and placed fourth out of a small field. Placke is a perfect 7-for-7 this 2021-22 season in terms of placing inside the top 10 at every event. At the Moundbuilder Classic, Placke shot an 84-85–169 (tied for sixth). Next in line were Mya Nurse (87-94–181) and Emily Jensen (90-93–183), who placed 14th and 17th, respectively. The team’s top five was rounded out by Logan Eschliman (97-93–190; T-21st) and Lauren Havlat (92-98–190; T-21st). Two other Bulldogs also competed: Sarah Wilson (105-95–200; 24th) and Ashley Gerczynski (117-106–223; 27th).

·        Entering this week, Placke’s respective tournament place finishes have been seventh, eighth, first, second, fifth, sixth and sixth. The championship came back at the Matthew Goette Classic in September. Placke paces the Bulldogs with a season scoring average of 79.9. Her lowest individual rounds throughout this season have been 74, 75 and 76. Havlat also has one top 10 finish to her credit. In terms of season average, the rest of Concordia’s top five includes Havlat (88.9), Nurse (91.2), Eschliman (94.3) and Jensen (96.5).

·        At this past weekend’s Bethel Invite, the Bulldog men’s ‘A’ team shot a total of 292-299–591. The 292 was the team’s best score of the spring and just one shy of its low round from the fall. Typically, the Bulldogs have been led at the top of the lineup by the likes of Drew D’Ercole and Ivan Yabut. At least for this weekend, Hagerbaumer and Webert stood out as the top Dawgs. A native of Hooper, Neb., Hagerbaumer shot a two-day score of 72-72–143 (+1) and placed in a tie for seventh out of 65 golfers. The result marked Hagerbaumer’s second top 10 finish of the season (also placed ninth at the Siouxland Invite). Meanwhile, Webert finished just off the top 10 at 75-73–148 (T-11th).

·        Yabut and D’Ercole were next in line. Yabut turned in a score of 72-77–149 (T-14th) while D’Ercole carded a 73-77–150 (T-18th). Rounding out the ‘A’ grouping was Jacob Woodmancy (80-81–161; T-37th). D’Ercole and Yabut were coming off top 10 placements at the Doane Spring Invite. Gavin Buttshaw led the way for the second grouping with a total of 76-78–154 (T-26th). He was followed by Jaxson Fullerton (80-78–158; T-28th), Taylor Johnson (79-83–162; T-39th), Nathan Auffut (80-85–165; T-44th) and Tyler Bartels (88-92–180; 58th). As a group, the ‘B’ team carded a score of 315-324–639 and placed eighth.

·        Yabut and D’Ercole continue to be neck and neck for the lowest average score on the season. Yabut (75.2) just barely owns the team lead over D’Ercole (75.3). Another four Bulldogs sport averages below 80: Webert (76.9), Jack Williams (77.9), Hagerbaumer (77.9) and Woodmancy (79.8). As a team, Concordia has carded an average score of 303.6. In half their 16 2021-22 rounds, the Bulldogs have turned in scores below 300. Yabut set the bar high in the fall when he broke a program individual record for 18 holes by shooting a 65.

·        The women’s team will tee off at 10 a.m. CT from Highlands Golf Course on Wednesday as they finish up the Concordia Bulldog Invite. Looking ahead to the beginning of next week, both teams will compete at the Hastings Bronco Invite on April 11-12. By that point, the GPAC Championships will be less than two weeks away.

Softball

·        The schedule is picking up in intensity. Since last week’s report, the Bulldogs played three GPAC doubleheaders, which resulted in a sweep of Doane on March 29 and then splits with both Northwestern (April 2) and College of Saint Mary (April 4). The Doane and CSM twin bills were played at Plum Creek Park while the two games against Northwestern took place in Orange City, Iowa. Through five GPAC doubleheaders, Concordia has split three, swept one and been swept in one. That leaves Head Coach Tatum Edwards’ squad at 5-5 in the GPAC (16-14 overall). For more information on Concordia Softball, click HERE.

·        The Bulldogs have completed five of their 11 scheduled conference doubleheaders and are hovering in the middle of the GPAC standings. According to the official GPAC ratings released on Monday, the top four teams in the league are Morningside, Midland, Jamestown and Northwestern. Concordia certainly looked like it belonged on the same field last week as Northwestern. Camry Moore held the Red Raiders to just one run on two hits in a sterling complete game as part of game one. In that 3-1 Bulldog victory, Kylie Shottenkirk came through with a clutch three-run homer in the sixth that proved to be the game winner. Concordia was swept by Midland but still has yet to play Morningside or Jamestown.

·        Moore has always excelled as a Bulldog, but she’s taken things to a new level of late. The Crete High School product has allowed just one earned run over her last three starts (three complete games) while dominating conference opponents. In GPAC games only, Moore has made six pitching appearances (36 innings) and owns a 0.58 ERA to go along with 29 strikeouts and two walks. Conference foes are hitting .213 against her. The precise control of Moore continues to be a marvel. She has walked only five batters in 92 innings overall this season. Among GPAC players, Moore ranks third in overall season ERA (1.60). At the plate, she ranks fourth in the league in batting average (.456).

·        Moore keeps rising up the program’s all-time rankings. From a pitching perspective, Moore sports school career rankings of second in ERA (2.00), third in wins (49), sixth in innings pitched (436.2) and seventh in strikeouts (308). As a hitter, Moore ranks fifth in RBIs (112), seventh in home runs (14), seventh in runs scored (109) and 10th in doubles (29). Recently, Moore eclipsed 300 career strikeouts. She still has a shot at becoming the program’s all-time leader for lowest ERA if she can move hers below the 1.95 ERA of Celine Lassaigne.

·        Over the six games played the past week, five Concordia regulars batted better than .350: Shottenkirk (.444; 8-for-18), Zoie Isom (.438; 7-for-16), Kylee Nixon (.400; 8-for-20), Moore (.389; 7-for-18) and Caitlin McGarvie (.357; 5-for-14). Isom has flashed some power with three home runs, including a grand slam in the 6-1 game one win over Doane. Isom also crushed a booming two-run shot in Monday’s second game with CSM. The play of the freshmen Isom and Shottenkirk provides reason for excitement for the future. Shottenkirk has started all but one game as the team’s shortstop.

·        Senior day is coming up already on Saturday. As part of a home doubleheader, the Bulldogs will celebrate seniors Camry Moore and Kylee Nixon (listed as juniors in terms of playing eligibility). Both Moore and Nixon have been key parts of the team since they arrived in the fall of 2018. The duo has helped the program to a combined four-year record of 88-41 with a national tournament appearance in 2021 (after reaching the GPAC Championship Series). In 120 career games, Nixon has batted .347 (121-for-349) with 89 runs scored, 27 doubles, nine home runs, 68 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.

·        A busy week continues Tuesday (April 5) with a 5 p.m. CT doubleheader at Nebraska Wesleyan (12-5). Concordia will be back home this weekend while hosting Jamestown (16-14, 3-3 GPAC) at 5 p.m. on Friday and then Dakota Wesleyan (9-20, 1-7 GPAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Bulldogs have not played Nebraska Wesleyan since 2018 when the two sides split a doubleheader in Lincoln.

Baseball

·        It was a thoroughly dominant weekend of conference play as the Bulldogs routed Midland in each of four games in the series that included two in Fremont and two in Seward. Concordia won by respective scores of 16-2, 21-6, 11-5 and 12-2. The four-game set was recognized by@NAIAball (Twitter) as the NAIA Big Series of the Week. After taking all four games, Head Coach Ryan Dupic’s squad moved to 22-7-1 overall and to 11-1 within the GPAC. Not quite halfway through the conference slate, the Bulldogs are tied with Doane atop the standings. For more information on Concordia Baseball, click HERE.

·        Excluding the 2020 season (which was cut short by COVID-19), the Bulldogs have won at least 10 of their first 12 conference games in three-straight seasons (2019, 2021 and 2022). The ’19 squad got on a roll that will be hard to ever duplicate. It went 15-0 to open conference play before finally suffering a loss. The ’21 team started out 10-2 while this year’s edition is 11-1. The 2019 team remains the program record holder for most conference wins in a season with 23. Last year’s NAIA World Series qualifier put together a league mark of 21-7. A perfect GPAC regular season has happened in fairly recent years. Doane went an unblemished 20-0 during the 2014 GPAC regular season.

·        The four-game set this past weekend looked a lot like the first four games of GPAC play that saw Concordia have its way with Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings. Over four contests with Midland, the Bulldogs outscored the Warriors by a combined total of 60-15 and produced a slash line of .455 BA/.587 OBP/.765 SLG at the plate. Incredibly, four different Concordia players notched at least eight hits in the series: Jaidan Quinn (8-for-12), Alec Blakestad (8-for-14), Keaton Candor (8-for-16) and Jay Adams (8-for-17). Quinn’s series included seven runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and a 1.333 slugging percentage.

·        The off-the-charts offensive production also included a game two with three grand slams, something that has likely never before been done in school history. The grand slams were belted by Jesse Garcia, Ben Berg and Tanner Tompkins. The Bulldogs slugged a combined nine home runs in the series with two apiece from Adams and Quinn. In addition, Joey Grabanski (7-for-13) and Ty Nekoliczak (6-for-12) both hit .500 or better on the series without leaving the yard. Blakestand and Candor led the way with eight RBIs apiece.

·        With his eight hits over the weekend, Candor surpassed 200 hits for his career. He’s just the third Bulldog to accomplish that feat. He joins Zak Goodrich (234) and Christian Meza (216) in the 200-hit club. A native of Merrill, Iowa, Candor is also the program all-time leader in home runs (36), RBIs (161), bases on balls (99) and games played (195). Candor is also sneaking up on Goodrich’s record for runs scored of 152. Candor is currently at 148 runs. On the season, Candor is hitting .353 with six doubles, seven home runs and 33 RBIs.

·        By season’s end, Concordia figures to be all over the list of all-conference teams. As things currently stand, four of the top five in the GPAC in batting average are Bulldogs: Grabanski (.453), Blakestad (.435), Tompkins (.422) and Adams (.413). Concordia also boasts the top six in the conference in on-base percentage. A Waverly, Neb., native, Adams currently paces the conference in runs scored (41), hits (45) and RBIs (40) while also ranking second in homers. Adams and Quinn are currently tied for the team home run lead with 11 apiece.

·        It’s easy for the pitching staff to be overshadowed by what the offense is doing, but the Bulldogs got quality work last week from the starting hurlers. All four starters last week went at least five innings. The best results came from the Johnsons – Alex and Caden. Alex went six innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Caden also covered six innings and surrendered two earned runs on six hits and no walks to go with eight strikeouts. Caden Bugarske and Christian Gutierrez also were credited with ins in solid outings.

·        A stretch of road games was going to be on the horizon after Concordia played 10 of its first 12 GPAC games at home. The Bulldogs will journey to Sioux City, Iowa, to play a 1 p.m. CT doubleheader at Morningside (17-10, 4-8 GPAC) on Friday before trekking to play Jamestown (14-17, 3-7 GPAC) at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Last week’s Saturday doubleheader at Midland was Concordia’s first road action within the GPAC.
