Concordia men's soccer looks to reach new heights in 2011

11 AUG 2011

Concordia University tied for seventh in the 2011 GPAC Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches’ Poll.  The Bulldogs posted a 7-10-2 overall record with a 4-7 mark in conference play during the 2010 season.

Last year, the Bulldogs ended the regular season on a five-game losing streak but still managed to qualify for the GPAC Postseason Tournament.  Concordia lost in the opening round to eventual National Champion Hastings College.  Coach Jason Weides, now entering his fourth year as head coach, looks for his 2011 squad to reach new heights.

“We have so many goals and expectations for the team this year,” said Weides.  “We are eyeing a spot in the GPAC Championship game.  From there, it is a one-game playoff to earn a trip to Nationals.”

With a total of 15 returning letter winners and a talented recruiting class, it’s easy to see why Coach Weides is optimistic about the 2011 season.  “We will have the largest senior class in my time here at Concordia, and that will give us plenty of experienced leaders,” noted Weides.  “I also believe many of the newcomers will immediately compete for starting spots and significant minutes.”

Concordia had three players receive GPAC honors following the 2010 season.  Aaron Skipworth was a second team All-GPAC performer, while Todd May and Kurt O’Kelly were honorable mention All-GPAC selections a year ago.  Those three, along with sophomore Nathan Douglas, will lead the way for Concordia in 2011.

Skipworth scored a team-high nine goals and added four assists last season.  O’Kelly started 18 games as a defender for the Bulldogs in his junior season, and May delivered five goals and two assists in just 12 starts.  Douglas totaled seven goals (2nd-Team) and five assists as a freshman in 2010.  Coach Weides will look to this group to be especially influential to the success of the 2011 squad.

“Aaron and Nathan were our top two point scorers last year, so they should again be influential in scoring goals,” remarked Weides.  “Todd will be an important figure in the midfield helping to dictate the pace of the game.  Kurt will help command and anchor a relatively young backline.  We should be solid in possession and moving forward.  We return most of our attacking players, so we should build on our dynamic attacking play.”

Several other starters also return in 2011.  Jeremiah Majorins, Kolt O’Kelly, Eric Fox, Tim Soenksen, Raul Lopez and Ian Euler all contributed significantly during the 2010 season.  Chris Podlich also returns in goal for the Bulldogs.  Podlich started 16 games in goal last season and totaled 101 saves and two shutouts on the year.

Hastings College, Doane College and Sioux Falls were the top teams in the GPAC last season, and Hastings won the 2010 NAIA Championship.  Even with the departure of Sioux Falls, the GPAC should again be balanced with several talented teams.  “Hastings should be the preseason GPAC favorite,” said Weides.  “They had a great run last year to win the national championship, and they return the bulk of their team.  But the great thing about the GPAC in men’s soccer is that every game is a challenge.”

The Bulldogs open the regular season at home against William Penn on August 27.  Conference play begins on September 24, and there are eight scheduled home contests on the 2011 schedule.

“This team is going to be fun to work with, because they all know that we are capable of reaching new heights this year,” added Weides.  “Our athletes appear hungry to prove themselves, and I expect that they will approach all of our games with great confidence.”

Bulldogs open 2011 season with 5-0 win over William Penn

Concordia University picked up an easy 5-0 men’s soccer win over William Penn University on Saturday afternoon in Seward.  The Bulldogs controlled play throughout the contest to pick up the win in the opening contest of the year for both teams.

"It was a good team effort from top to bottom today,” remarked Jason Weides, head coach of the Bulldogs.  “We tied this team last year, so it’s a good sign that we controlled play today like we did.”

The Bulldogs seized control early and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.  Aaron Skipworth (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored the first goal of the contest off assists by Chris DeFeyter and Ian Euler (Lincoln, Neb.).  Later in the half, William Penn goalie Sam Gurksi was caught out of position, and Nathan Douglas (Winnipeg, Can.) found the corner of the goal to put Concordia up 2-0.  Concordia held a 13-5 overall shot advantage with an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal in the opening half of play.

“We struggled a little bit at the start of the game but found our rhythm as the first half went on,” added Weides.  “We tried to apply heavy pressure early, and our guys were hungry for more goals as the game went on.”

Concordia poured it on in the second half.  The Bulldogs continued to control the play and totaled 18 shots in the final half.  Skipworth scored his second goal of the game early in the second half to put the Bulldogs up by three.  Douglas added his second goal of the game at the 76-minute mark to make the score 4-0.  Nate Friesner (Shawnee, Kan.) scored the final goal of the contest off a nice assist by Raul Lopez (El Paso, Texas), and the Bulldogs secured the 5-0 victory.

Despite the convincing win, Coach Weides saw some things he’d like to improve.  “William Penn created some dangerous situations at times during the match, so I’d like for us to tighten up our defensive shifts,” noted Weides.  “I’d also like for us to change speeds a little more throughout the game.  Today, we played at a pretty consistent and fast pace.  I would like us to dictate the tempo and pace more than we did today.”

For the game, Concordia held a 31-11 advantage in total shots.  Kolt O’Kelly (Littleton, Colo.) led Concordia with eight total shots (four on goal).  Skipworth and Douglas combined for nine shots on the afternoon.  Brendan Buchanan picked up the win in goal in his first career start for the Bulldogs.  The freshman made five saves on the day.

“Today was definitely a good start for us,” said Weides.  “A lot of players gave us quality minutes, and guys produced on both sides of the ball.  I thought our players had a great attitude entering today’s game, and we played well.”

Concordia travels to William Woods on September 4.

Bulldogs jump out early, pick up big 4-1 win over Dordt College

24 SEP 2011

Concordia University 4, (RV) Dordt College 1 (view stats)

Concordia University jumped out to a quick lead and picked up a big 4-1 men’s soccer win over Dordt College on Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.  It was the GPAC-opening game for both teams.  The Bulldogs won their third straight to move to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0 in GPAC play.  Concordia also improved to 4-0 at home so far this year.  Dordt College, who received votes in last week’s NAIA Top 25 Poll, dropped its first game of the season to fall to 7-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The Bulldogs grabbed momentum and took control of the game early in the first half.  Concordia scored three goals in the first 20 minutes, and defensive pressure kept Dordt College from getting anything going.  Tim Soenksen (Lincoln, Neb.) scored off a corner kick to put the Bulldogs in front just three minutes into the contest.  Aaron Skipworth (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added to the Bulldog lead with a goal in the 12th minute.  It was Skipworth’s fifth goal of the season.  Ian Euler (Lincoln, Neb.) added a goal in the 19th minute to increase the lead to 3-0.  Skipworth had the assist on Euler’s goal.

“Our guys were ready to play right from the beginning,” remarked Jason Weides, head coach of the Bulldogs.  “They were excited to start conference play against some quality competition.  We wanted to show that we’ve improved, and we did that today.  We looked really sharp in the attack, especially in the first 20 minutes.”

Following the tremendous start, Concordia struggled down the stretch in the first half.   Dordt College scored in the 33rd minute to cut Concordia’s lead to two at 3-1.  Brady Van Holland had the goal for the Defenders, and Concordia took a 3-1 lead into halftime.

“We didn’t want to be satisfied with half a performance,” said Weides.  “We played so well early on, but we didn’t finish the first half as well.  We addressed it at halftime.  We can sometimes win games by putting in half a performance, but we can’t win championships that way.  If we want to be where we can be, we need to be consistent.”

The score remained the same until late in the second half.  Concordia’s Nick Esser (Lincoln, Neb.) used his speed to get past several Dordt College players.  Esser found Kolt O’Kelly (Littleton, Colo.) wide open in front of the net, and O’Kelly scored for the final score of 4-1.

“We have the ability to score from all areas of the field,” added Weides.  “We don’t rely on just one guy.  We’ve been very dynamic in our attack, and we’ve been able to create goals in a lot of ways."

Concordia held a 19-9 shot advantage in the contest.  Dordt College finished with just two shots on goal.  Chris Podlich (Brisbane, Aus.) made just one save but earned the win in net for the Bulldogs.  Brian Verwolf made three saves and allowed the four goals in a losing effort for Dordt College.

The Bulldogs now travel to Hastings College on September 28 for a key GPAC contest against the Broncos.  Hastings College is coming off a National Championship season in 2010, and the Broncos are again ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll.  Coach Weides discussed the early season matchup.

“Today meant a lot to us in terms of confidence,” said Weides.  “Dordt came in on a roll with an undefeated record, and Hastings College is obviously off to a tremendous start as well.  Our team doesn’t fear anyone.  We’ve shown we have depth, and we’ll have to utilize that depth as we move through the conference season, especially against a team like Hastings.”

Concordia receives votes in latest NAIA Top 25

Things won’t get any easier for the Bulldogs, as they travel to Hastings College on Wednesday evening.  Hastings College, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Top 25, is a perfect 8-0 on the season.
