Game/event days on campus: Concordia Athletics continues to welcome fans to its venues for sporting events. Currently, there are no attendance limits. Before visiting road venues involving Bulldog teams, fans should be sure to check the spectator policies on those particular campuses. Other locations may require the use of face coverings. Once again, fans attending varsity sporting events at Concordia are able to purchase advance tickets online via HomeTown Ticketing. Tickets will also be sold on site on the day of events. Should any policies or protocols for fans change, updated information will be available on the athletics fan information page HERE.

Edwards sisters featured in Lincoln Journal Star: Sisters Tatum and Tristen Edwards were featured in the Lincoln Journal Star over the weekend. Now in her first season as head coach of Concordia softball, Tatum hired her younger sister Tristen as a graduate assistant. The sisters continue to bond over the game they love. Said Tatum, “Softball doesn't define who I am, but it's definitely a huge part of me. Being here and giving back to not only the sport but somewhere in Nebraska, that's been huge to me.” To read the entire story written by Clark Grell, click HERE.

Small school Schutte’s big-time game worthy of national attention: He may have come from small Nebraska Class DI Laurel-Concord-Coleridge High School, but Noah Schutte’s game was too big to ignore. After piling up more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds as a prep, Schutte chose Concordia as his college destination. Schutte flourished this past season while serving as a major reason why the Bulldogs reached incredible heights in one of the greatest campaigns in program history. For more on Schutte’s growth, click HERE.

Golf

·        Both the men’s and women’s teams are in action to begin this week. The Bulldogs are continuing play today (April 12) at the Hastings Invitational hosted at Lochland Country Club. On the first day of the event, the Concordia women led the field with a team score of 346 while the men were in third place with a score of 301. The Bulldogs also entered the day with a chance at earning an individual championship on both sides. The men got back to action for the first time since the Bethel Spring Invite (April 2-3) while the women last played April 5 at the Concordia Bulldog Invite. For more information on the Concordia Golf programs, click here: MEN | WOMEN.

·        Placke shot a five-over-par 77 in Hastings on Monday and held a two-stroke advantage atop the individual leaderboard. Placke won last week’s Concordia Bulldog Invite (shortened to one day) with a three-over-par 75. That performance marked the fifth career tournament win for the Seward High School product. She entered this week leading the team with a season scoring average of 79.6 and has placed in the top 10 of each of the first eight events of 2021-22. Below is a summary of Placke’s career collegiate wins.

o   2019 Nebraska Wesleyan Fall Classic – 79 (+8)

o   2020 Lila Frommelt Fall Classic – 72-77–149 (+7)

o   2020 Buena Vista Fall Invite – 77 (+5)

o   2021 Matthew Goette Fall Classic – 84 (+12)

o   2022 Concordia Bulldog Invite – 75 (+3)

·        Next in line for the Bulldogs at the home invite was Mya Nurse with an 87, which put her in a tie for 24th place. The rest of Concordia’s group of five featured Lauren Havlat (90; T-35th), Emily Jensen (90; T-35th) and Logan Eschliman (92; T-45th). Two Bulldogs also competed as individuals: Ashley Gerczynski (98; T-61st) and Sarah Wilson (100; T-69th).

·        Not only did Placke shoot the top score in Monday’s round in Hastings, Lauren Havlat and Mya Nurse turned in identical 87s (tied for 10th). The Bulldogs owned a seven-stroke lead in the team scoring. The rest of the team’s group of five included Logan Eschliman (95; T-20th) and Sarah Wilson (100; 27th). While competing individually, Ashley Gerczysnki shot a 95 (T-20th). Havlat is aiming for her second tournament top 10 placement of the campaign.

·        On the men’s side, Ivan Yabut entered day two tied with two others atop an individual leaderboard of 63 golfers at the Hastings Invite. Not far behind Yabut’s 71 were teammates Justin Webert (tied for fourth place) and Drew D’Ercole (tied for 15th place) who shot scores of 72 and 76, respectively. The performance on Monday marked the fourth time that Yabut has turned in a score of 71 or lower during the 2021-22 season. Fourteen competitors shot 75 or better in round one of the Hastings Invite.

·        The rest of the Concordia ‘A’ team in Hastings featured Jake Hagerbaumer (82; T-34th) and Gavin Buttshaw (87; T-50th). Hagerbaumer was named the GPAC Golfer of the Week on April 6. Meanwhile, the Bulldog ‘B’ team shot a score of 324 and is in sixth place. The ‘B’ group is made up of Jacob Woodmancy (77; 19th), Taylor Johnson (79; T-22nd), Josh D’Ercole (83; T-36th), Jaxson Fullerton (84; T-40th) and Nate Auffet (88; 52nd).

·        Once the Hastings Invite is in the books, both Concordia teams will be off from competition for the remainder of the week. Next up for the women is the Siouxland Invite next Monday-Tuesday (April 18-19) when Northwestern and Dordt will serve as co-hosts of the event. The men will be in action those same two days while taking part in the GPAC Preview tournament hosted by Briar Cliff in Vermillion and Dakota Dunes, S.D. Those will be the final tournaments leading up to the GPAC Championships for both sides.

Softball

·        The busiest week since coming back from the Tucson Invitational is in the books. The Bulldogs played eight games in a six-day stretch with doubleheaders on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday of this past week. The result was a split every time out as Concordia took on College of Saint Mary, Nebraska Wesleyan, Jamestown and Dakota Wesleyan. Each of the GPAC twin bills took place at the home diamond of Plum Creek Park. Head Coach Tatum Edwards’ squad stands at 19-17 overall (7-7 GPAC) with eight games remaining in the regular season. For more information on Concordia Softball, click HERE.

·        Many possibilities still remain in terms of the conference race. To this point, the frontrunners atop the standings are Midland (12-2 GPAC), Dordt (8-2 GPAC), Mount Marty (7-3 GPAC) and Briar Cliff (6-4 GPAC). Midland is the reigning GPAC regular season and tournament champion having gone 20-2 in conference games in 2021. The top two seeds in the final standings earn the right to host their own four-team pods for the conference tournament. The Bulldogs still have work to do to ensure they clinch a spot in the eight-team postseason tournament.

·        This past Saturday, the program celebrated its seniors in between games of the doubleheader with Dakota Wesleyan. A youthful squad, Concordia has only two senior players, but both have made a huge impact on the program – Camry Moore and Kylee Nixon. The Bulldogs also honored second-year graduate assistant coach Bre Hamilton and senior student manager Kaetlyn Todd. As for Moore and Nixon, they have helped Concordia to a combined four-year record of 91-44 with a national tournament appearance in 2021. That ’21 squad qualified for nationals thanks to a run to the GPAC Championship Series.

·        Moore will go down as one of the top players in program history for her abilities with both her bat and pitching arm. From an offensive perspective, Moore sports program career rankings of third in RBIs (114), fifth in runs scored (117), sixth in batting average (.392), seventh in home runs (14), 10th in doubles (31) and 12th in hits (160). On the program’s all-time pitching lists, Moore ranks first in ERA (1.94), third in wins (51), sixth in innings pitched (457.2) and seventh in strikeouts (327). Incredibly, Moore has issued only 36 walks in her college career as a pitcher. She was named Second Team All-GPAC in 2019 and First Team All-GPAC in 2021.

·        Nixon has also enjoyed a fine career as a mainstay at second base. Over 126 career collegiate games, the York High School product has compiled 124 hits, 90 runs scored, 28 doubles, 16 stolen bases, nine home runs and 68 RBIs. Her career batting average is .337. Nixon garnered Honorable Mention All-GPAC accolades last season. In 2022, Nixon is hitting .312 with eight doubles, one triple, a home run and 11 RBIs. She also owns a .968 fielding percentage having successfully fielded 121 of 125 chances at second base.

·        Moore has continued her tear in all aspects, but especially from the pitching rubber. In her four starts last week, Moore fired seven-inning complete games each outing (28 innings) and allowed only two earned runs (five total runs) on 20 hits and two walks while recording 25 strikeouts. She tossed four-hit shutouts in wins against both College of Saint Mary and Nebraska Wesleyan. Moore should be a strong candidate for GPAC Pitcher of the Year honors. In conference games only, she owns a 0.70 ERA with 43 strikeouts (against two walks) in 50 innings. Overall this season, Moore is 12-7 with a 1.42 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 113 innings (19 appearances).

·        Concordia went 4-4 over the past week, which included a nonconference doubleheader split at Nebraska Wesleyan. At the plate, the Bulldogs hit .272 with 12 doubles, a home run, an on-base percentage of .328 and slugging percentage of .341 during the week. Moore was also the team’s top hitter during that stretch as she went 12-for-24 with 11 runs, four doubles and four RBIs. The next highest batting averages were produced by Caitlyn McGarvie (.364; 8-for-22) and Julia Van Wey (.346; 9-for-26). The only homer of the week was belted by Zoie Isom.

·        The only thing on the schedule for this week is today (April 12)’s doubleheader at Morningside (16-10, 4-4 GPAC). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT from the Jensen Softball Complex in Sioux City, Iowa. Last season, Concordia defeated the Mustangs twice during the GPAC tournament in the process of advancing to the GPAC Championship Series.

Baseball

·        After playing 10 of its first 12 conference games at home, Concordia went on its first extended weekend road trip with the results being a doubleheader split at Morningside on April 8 and a pair of losses at Jamestown on April 9. The scores at Morningside were 13-4 in the game one win and 11-1 (eight innings) in the game two loss. The Bulldogs then fell in North Dakota by scores of 10-6 and 8-7. Those results leave Head Coach Ryan Dupic’s squad at 23-10-1 overall and at 12-4 inside conference play. Concordia is looking up in the standings at first-place Doane (15-1 GPAC). For more information on Concordia Baseball, click HERE.

·        The three-straight losses to close the weekend followed what had been a dominant previous weekend for the Bulldogs, who outscored Midland by a combined total of 60-15 in a four-game sweep. This past weekend, Concordia was outnumbered in the run department, 33-27, while just barely out-homering its foes, 5-4. Those figures are uncharacteristic of a Bulldog outfit that had started out 12-1 in league play. Concordia will try to shore up its run prevention after it posted a 9.21 ERA over the weekend while allowing opposing batters to hit .325 with 17 extra base hits. Alex Johnson was the only starter last week to make it through five innings.

·        The offensive numbers were still solid overall. Third baseman Jaidan Quinn continues to serve as an on-base machine. Over last weekend’s action, Quinn went a combined 6-for-12 with five runs scored, a double, a home run and four RBIs. He also reached base four more times thanks to two walks and two hit-by-pitches. The Kansas City area native leads the team in many key statistical categories, including home runs (12), on-base percentage (.545) and slugging percentage (.839). Among GPAC players, Quinn ranks No. 1 in on-base percentage and second in both home runs and slugging percentage.

·        Heading into this week, the Bulldogs comfortably lead the GPAC in many key offensive categories, including runs scored (334), home runs (64), walks (184), batting average (.348), on-base percentage (.466) and slugging percentage (.613). Six of the GPAC’s top eight hitters, in terms of on-base percentage, are from Concordia: Quinn (.545), Alec Blakestad (.527), Ty Nekoliczak (.518), Jesse Garcia (.496), Jay Adams (.487) and Joey Grabanski (.486). The Bulldogs are the only team in the league to have four players with at least eight home runs: Quinn (12), Adams (11), Grabanski (nine) and Keaton Candor (eight).

·        Candor homered once this past weekend. It pushed his school record career homer total to 37. The outfielder from Merrill, Iowa, is also the program’s all-time record holder in RBIs (164), games played (199) and walks (101). His 149 runs scored are second to only Zak Goodrich (152). A career .320 hitter, Candor has notched 205 career hits, which ranks behind Goodrich (234) and Christian Meza (216) for No. 3 in school history. On the season, Candor is hitting .342 with seven doubles, eight home runs, 36 RBIs and a .607 slugging percentage.

·        Alex Johnson has made his mark as the Concordia’s most reliable pitcher to this point. He picked up a win last week at Morningside while allowing just one earned run on two hits and one walk in five innings. The Olathe, Kan., native also collected four strikeouts. In eight pitching appearances this season, Johnson is 5-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 32.1 innings. Opposing batters are hitting just .167 against him and have only four extra base hits in 114 at bats.

·        The combination of Ben Berg and Tanner Tompkins has supplied the Bulldogs with a catching combination about as good as any in the NAIA. Tompkins keeps on sticking the ball. He’s hitting .416 with nine doubles, four home runs and 30 RBIs. Meanwhile, Berg is hitting .288 with six home runs and 20 RBIs. The Bulldogs have gotten both in the lineup in some games by putting Berg at first base. Berg and Tompkins both homered in the first game of the doubleheader at Jamestown.

·        This will be a significant weekend of home action as Concordia looks forward to hosting doubleheaders with Doane (26-7, 15-1 GPAC) at 1 p.m. CT on Friday and with Mount Marty (25-9, 10-4 GPAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Bulldogs will celebrate senior day on Saturday, which will mark the final day of regular season home action. With the way the schedule works out, Concordia will be on the road for its final eight conference regular season games (two four-game series – at Dordt/Briar Cliff).

Track & Field

·        The Bulldogs hosted their first home meet of the 2022 outdoor season this past week while welcoming athletes from 11 different colleges/universities to the Concordia Invite. Up against a strong field, Concordia athletes combined for six event championships and six performances that met the automatic national qualifying standard. Head Coach Matt Beisel’s squad has competed in three weeks of outdoor competition. For more information on Concordia Track & Field, click HERE.

·        Below is a listing of marks produced by Bulldogs that have been reported to the national leaderboard. The 2022 outdoor season tally to date includes nine ‘A’ standards and 11 ‘B’ standards. New ‘A’ standards were turned in last week by the women’s 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays.

o   Women’s 4x400m relay – A (3:53.07)

·        The performance of the women’s 4x8 emerged as the biggest story of the meet for Concordia. The group included Rylee Haecker, Jenna Esch, Kylahn Heritage and Keri Bauer. The quartet didn’t merely qualify for nationals, it also broke the meet and Bulldog Stadium records. The group strode to a time of 9:18.80, breaking the previous stadium standard of 9:20.96 by Morningside in 2013. Currently, Concordia owns the nation’s top time in the 4x8. This past indoor season, the Bulldogs placed third nationally in the 4x8 with a time of 9:16.78 at the national meet.

·        The women’s 4x4 believes it still has more left in the tank, but it got the qualifying time out of the way by clocking in at 3:53.07 at the Concordia Invite. That mark was achieved by the group of Sarah Lewis, Jordan Koepke, Jacee Pfeifer and Rachel Battershell. Lewis also put a ‘B’ standard on the board in the 100 hurdles while Koepke improved her ‘B’ mark in the 400 hurdles. This past indoor season, the Bulldog women’s 4x4 placed fifth at the national meet in a time of 3:48.85.

·        Fresh off a weight throw All-America award during indoor, Chris Wren reached new ground this past Saturday by landing the hammer at 194’ 5” for a personal best that puts him No. 7 on the program’s all-time list. Wren placed second in the event at the Concordia Invite while pacing the throws group. On the women’s side of the hammer, Sarah Ragland was the meet runner up with her season best of 175’ 5.” More ‘A’ standards are likely on the way as the season progresses. The throws crew notched five new ‘B’ marks over the weekend courtesy of Andy Amos (hammer), Olivia Buschow (discus), Abby Gerber (hammer) and Alli Owings (shot put and hammer).

·        A former GPAC cross country meet runner up, Kylahn Heritage appears to be back in a groove. She ran her fastest 800 meters ever as part of the 4x8 and then won the 5,000 meter race at the Concordia Invite with a personal best of 18:29.11. Heritage is a two-time All-America as part of the 4x8 and has her sights set on also potentially earning All-America honors individually. Her best chance to do that may be in the 1,500 meters where she currently ranks 31st nationally with a time of 4:45.42.

·        The women’s pole vault field was made up of mostly Bulldogs at the Concordia Invite. The competition was won by three-time national champion Josie Puelz, who cleared 12’ 3 ½.” Puelz and Mapson (runner up) again vaulted above the national qualifying standard. Puelz was just named GPAC Field Athlete of the Week on April 6. On the men’s side of the pole vault, Chase Berry placed second while clearing 15’ 1” and Zach Bennetts vaulted 14’ 7 ¼.” As someone with lofty standards, Puelz will expect to challenge her outdoor school record of 13’ 7 ¼” at some point this spring.

·        The Bulldogs will be back in action this Friday at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Loper Invitational in Kearney, Neb. The first events are scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. CT from Kearney High School. The tentative meet schedule can be found HERE.

Tennis

·        Due to a postponement in last week’s schedule, the men’s team played only once last week while the women were in action twice. On the women’s side, the Bulldogs dropped matches by scores of 5-2 versus College of Saint Mary and 7-0 versus Midland. The men also fell in a 7-0 decision at the hands of reigning GPAC champion Midland. Originally, Concordia was slated to play at Hastings on April 6, but inclement weather resulted in a postponement. Head Coach Cam Long’s squads sport records of 6-7 (3-1 GPAC) on the men’s side and 4-9 (2-3 GPAC) on the women’s side. For more information on Concordia Tennis, click here: MEN | WOMEN.

·        The Bulldog men ran into a Warrior squad that is again the favorite to win the GPAC and represent the conference at the national tournament. Dating back to the start of the 2021 season, Concordia is 9-3 against GPAC competition with all three losses being dealt by Midland. The Bulldogs had their best shot at winning a match last week at the No. 1 doubles spot, where the duo of Eduardo Luzzi and Juan Rabellino came up short, 7-5. Midland won more comfortably at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, taking them, 6-1, and, 6-3, respectively.

·        In singles action versus Midland, Concordia’s Shawn Springer came back to win the second set at No. 3 before falling in the tiebreaker. At the top two spots, Luzzi (2-6, 4-6) and Isaac Howes (2-6, 5-7) put up a fight despite coming up on the short end. The rest of the Bulldog singles lineup included Eduardo Rojas at No. 4, Jack Kitson at No. 5 and Joe Bindl at No. 6.

·        Collectively this season, the Bulldog men have produced records of 38-40 in singles and 23-16 in doubles. Rabellino has gone 3-0 in GPAC singles matches while playing towards the back end of the lineup. The team’s overall singles wins leader is Howes, who is 6-7. Bindl is close behind with five wins. In doubles, the duo of Luzzi and Rabellino is 6-3 while Berryman and Bindl are 6-4.

·        The Concordia women were led in the match against CSM by Tara Ferrel, who emerged victorious at the No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles positions. In addition, Sofia Morales moved to 4-0 in GPAC singles matches at the time with her breezy 6-0, 6-0, win at the top. However, the Flames came away with the team victory by taking two doubles matches and four singles decisions. The Bulldogs had entered the week having won back-to-back GPAC outings before colliding with CSM and Midland.

·        Combined this season, the Concordia women have posted records of 29-49 in singles and 15-24 in doubles. Morales did lose her unblemished GPAC singles mark in the matchup with Midland. She fell by a score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) while nearly forcing a third set. Overall this season, Morales tops the Bulldogs with seven singles wins. The winningest doubles duo has been Brooke Hosick and Julia Phillips, who are 4-4. The team of Morales and Tessa Blough are 3-5 at the No. 1 spot.

The start of this week became more jampacked due to the postponement of the Hastings matches. Both the men’s and women’s teams are slated to play at Doane at 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday and then at Hastings at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Concordia will have the rest of the week off for the Easter break. Both Bulldog squads will have completed their GPAC regular season schedules by the time play wraps up at Hastings on Wednesday.
