Weekend of ups and downs for Bulldogs

30 NOV-2 DEC 2007

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's basketball eclipsed the century mark for the second time this season against Peru State, downing the Bobcats 101-93 on Friday before falling to eighth-ranked Morningside College, 87-68, on Sunday in Sioux City, Iowa.

It was a busy and strange weekend for the Bulldogs (8-1, 2-1 GPAC) who traveled to Johnson, Neb., to take on the Bobcats in a non-conference game on Friday night. Peru State, located in Peru, Neb., is unable to play on their campus due to renovations.

After the game on Friday the Bulldogs traveled to Bellevue, Neb., (Omaha) to spend the night rather than returning to Seward before departing for Sioux City, Iowa the next morning. Mother Nature threw the squad a curveball with the first winter storm of the season, forcing the Saturday game to be postponed to Sunday, thus forcing the Bulldogs to return to Seward.

Whether it was the travel schedule or the fact that Morningside is a quality team, the Bulldogs didn't fare as well as one might like on Sunday against the Mustangs.

Concordia opened the game with a flurry, jumping out to a 9-2 lead after a three-pointer by Melissa Tinkham. Morningside then went to work, out-scoring the Bulldogs by a margin of 28-10 over the next 14 minutes.

Trailing by 12 at intermission the Bulldogs would get no closer than that in the second half as the Mustang lead swelled to as many as 26. Morningside hit seven threes in the second half, 11 in the game, to pull away.

Concordia struggled to take care of the basketball throughout the contest, finishing the game with an uncharacteristic 36 turnovers.

Tinkham had a game-high 25 points on 6-of-15 shooting, including five three-point field goals. She also went 8-for-10 from the line and dished out four assists in 37 minutes of work. Whitney Stichka and Jordan Schmoldt each finished with nine points while Libby Hirssig grabbed a game-high 10 boards.

Morningside was paced by Kristi Tighe who had 25 points, 21 coming from beyond the arc where she finished 7-for-10. Autumn Bartel (15), Dani Gass (12) and Roni Miller (10) were also all in double figures.

Against Peru the Bulldogs had six players in double digits, led by Stichka and Stacy Scheer who tallied 20 each. Lovegrove added 13, Tinkham 12 and Hirssig 11 points to go with eight rebounds. Schmoldt rounded out those in double digits with 10.

The Bulldogs are back in action this week taking on bothWesleyans, Nebraska and Dakota, on Wednesday and Saturday. Game times are at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Dakota Wesleyan outscored the Bulldogs 16-6 in the opening 8:26 of the game. Concordia bounced back to tie the game at 18 just five minutes later. During the 12-2 run the Bulldogs got a three by Melissa Tinkham to pull within four. Freshman Kristin Miller sank a pair of free throws to cap the run.

Tinkham hit back-to-back threes to fuel the run that was capped by a pair of Jordan Schmoldt free throws after a steal.

The Concordia lead swelled to as many as 16 on two occasions down the stretch thanks in part to 12 second chance points on eight offensive boards. For the game the Bulldogs won the battle on the glass 44-31.

Concordia benefited from a strong performance at the charity stripe converting on 83.3 percent of their opportunities. In fact the Bulldogs made more free throws (20-of-24), than Dakota Wesleyan attempted (15).

Whitney Stichka led the Bulldogs offensively with 22 points to go along with seven boards. Stichka was one of three Concordia players in double digits including Tinkham with 18 and Schmoldt with 12. After controlling the tempo in the first half, the Tigers (1-11, 0-0 MCAC) struggled with ball control in the second half, piling up 18 turnovers that the Bulldogs (11-1, 4-1 GPAC) would turn into a decisive lead.

Peru State jumped out to a 14-7 lead with five minutes into the game when Lindsey Carlson drained a three. After a steal by Whitney Stichka, Concordia coach Drew Olson settled his team down with a quick time out.

After trading buckets for rest of the first half the Bulldogs took their first lead of the game when Stichka spotted up from the top of the key for a key three pointer, putting the Bulldogs up 29-28. With seven seconds remaining in the half, Stichka took ball the length of the court and tied the score at 37-37.

After the break the squads played even basketball until the 15-minute mark. The Bulldogs then went on a 15-6 run in the next three minutes to take control of the game.

The Concordia lead swelled to as many as 24 with 7:50 remaining. Concordia's second-half surge was thanks in large part to 48 points in the paint, most of which came on second-chance opportunities. Bulldog offensive rebounds totaled 24 for the game.

Concordia also benefited from a strong performance at the charity stripe, converting on 33-46 free throws, while Peru was 25-39 in the game.

Bulldogs neutralize Chargers

5 JAN 2008

The 10th-ranked Concordia women's basketball team rode a wave of momentum to a blowout 79-58 victory over the Briar Cliff University Chargers on Saturday afternoon in GPAC action at the Doghouse.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead three minutes into the game and never looked back. The closest the Chargers would get is a seven point deficit at 15-8. Concordia's lead grew to as much as 17 before the halftime intermission, at 48-31.

Concordia's shooters went cold to start the second half as the Charger defense held the Bulldogs to eight points in the first seven minutes of the second half. Luckily for the Bulldogs the Briar Cliff shooters were just as cool and Concordia was able to keep the sizable lead they had established. Inevitably the Bulldog shooters found their touch and the Concordia lead ballooned to as much as 24 before Head Coach Drew Olson called off the dogs, and got his freshman some much valued playing time.

The Bulldogs were led offensively by junior guard Melissa Tinkham, who had 24 points on 9-of-24 shooting from the field that included being 6-of-16 from three point range. The two teams traded buckets for the remainder of the first half, and the Bulldogs took a 35-32 lead into halftime on the strength of two Whitney Stichka free throws.

The tide didn't turn for Concordia until, with 2:53 remaining, Stichka went the length of the court for one of her signature lay ins. The Tigers still had the momentum coming out after halftime and two minutes into the second half Doane tied the score at 48-48. The two teams matched basket for basket the next 12 minutes until with 6:39 remaining Doane's Nicole Anderson missed the back end of a one-and-one opportunity, the Bulldogs held on to a slim 70-69 lead and on the ensuing offensive possession Concordia's junior guard Whitney Stichka worked off a screen from senior Liz Bauer and pulled up for a three from the top of the arc that hit nothing but net to put the Bulldogs up four at 73-69.
