Dawgs move to 4-0 in GPAC with win at Northwestern

April 17, 2021

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The conference record remains perfect following a trip to Orange City, Iowa, for the Concordia University Men’s Tennis team. The Bulldogs swept their way through doubles and then won five of six singles matches in a 6-1 victory at Northwestern on Saturday (April 17). The Red Raiders avoided being shut out by taking a hotly contested match at No. 1 singles.

Head Coach David DeSimone’s squad returned to the action for the first time since a 7-0 win over Mount Marty a week earlier. Concordia has moved to 4-0 in the GPAC (8-4 overall).

“The men’s team played well today,” DeSimone said. “Doubles was solid 1 through 3 and we continued on in singles. Isaac (Howes) and Joe (Bindl) played excellent matches and Gregor (Lainer) lost a tough one against a good player. We are excited to continue building on all the good things taking place so far this season.”

The Bulldogs took the lead while sweeping doubles courtesy of the tandems of Lainer and Eduardo Rojas at No. 1 (6-4), Jeremiah Berryman and Luke Zoller at No. 2 (6-4) and Jack Kitson and Juan Rabellino at No. 3 (6-2).

As mentioned by DeSimone, Lainer was clipped in a hard fought battle at No. 1 singles. The rest of the Concordia lineup earned victories. The 2 through 6 spots were held down by Berryman (6-2, 6-2), Rojas (6-0, 6-4), Zoller (6-2, 6-4), Howes (6-2, 6-2) and Bindl (6-1, 6-2), respectively.

As a team, the Bulldogs are 20-4 in singles and 9-3 in doubles through four GPAC matches. Three Concordia players are 4-0 in GPAC singles competition: Bindl, Howes and Zoller (Berryman is 3-0). Bindl owns an impressive overall singles record of 10-1.

It will be senior day on Wednesday (April 21) when the Bulldogs host Doane (7-7, 1-0 GPAC) at 4:30 p.m. CT. The seniors that will be recognized are Zoller and Octavio Velazquez. The Tigers are currently rated as the No. 2 team in the official GPAC rankings.

Competition stiffens as senior day arrives on Wednesday

April 19, 2021

SEWARD, Neb. – Based on the official GPAC ratings, Concordia University Men’s Tennis has yet to face its two biggest challenges of the GPAC regular season. The stretch run begins on Wednesday when the Bulldogs will host Doane for senior day on Wednesday. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. CT from the Bulldog Tennis Courts. Concordia continues to carry an unbeaten conference mark.

·        Head Coach David DeSimone’s squad stayed unbeaten in conference play by claiming a 6-1 win at Northwestern over the weekend. So far this season, the Bulldogs have capitalized on playing the teams rated below them in the official GPAC rankings. Concordia has defeated Morningside, 4-3, Hastings, 6-1, Mount Marty, 7-0, and Northwestern, 6-1. With three teams still sporting unblemished records in the GPAC, the conference title remains up for grabs. Those teams are Concordia (4-0), Midland (4-0) and Doane (1-0).

·        The Bulldogs are vying for the first GPAC championship in program history. Prior to the formation of the GPAC in 2000, Concordia won conference titles in 1954 and in 1990. The ’54 team was inducted into the Concordia Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. In the GPAC era, the highest conference regular season place finish for Bulldog Men’s Tennis has been third. Concordia has reached the GPAC tournament semifinals eight times, but has not broken through to reach the championship match.

·        Through four GPAC matches, the Bulldogs have gone a combined 20-4 in singles matches and 9-3 in doubles. The lineup depth shows in the results with Concordia owning singles marks of 7-5 at No. 3, 8-3 at No. 4, 10-1 at No. 5 and 7-4 at No. 6 this season. Four Bulldogs are 3-0 or better in GPAC singles matches: Joe Bindl (4-0), Isaac Howes (4-0), Luke Zoller (4-0) and Jeremiah Berryman (3-0). Bindl was named the GPAC Player of the Week on April 7.

·        The seniors who will be honored on Wednesday are Luke Zoller (Lenexa, Kan.) and Octavio Velazquez (Round Lake Beach, Ill.). Zoller is in his fifth year in the program. He took advantage of the extra year of eligibility that was granted after the 2020 campaign was cut short. Zoller has won 28 singles matches in his career. During Zoller’s time as a Bulldog, the program has an overall record of 42-41.

·        Doane shared the GPAC regular season title in 2019 and then fell to Midland in the GPAC tournament final. The current Tiger team has been on pause since a 6-1 loss to McPherson College (Kan.) on March 28. If all goes as scheduled, Doane will play five conference matches from April 21-27. The only conference match the Tigers have played so far resulted in a 7-0 win over Northwestern.

Looking ahead
Concordia will finish the regular season at Midland on Feb. 27 when they hope to have an opportunity to win the GPAC outright. The GPAC tournament will be held April 30 – May 1 at Fremont High School.

Bindl clinches winner, Concordia runs GPAC mark to 5-0

April 21, 2021

SEWARD, Neb. – With just the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches left on the court, the Concordia University Men’s Tennis team needed to pull through in both in order to defeat Doane on Wednesday (April 21) evening. Isaac Howes and Joe Bindl relished the clutch moments and lifted the Bulldogs to a 4-3 win over the visiting Tigers. Once again, the back half of the lineup played a critical role.

Head Coach David DeSimone has led both the men’s and women’s tennis teams to 5-0 starts in conference play. The Concordia men (9-4, 5-0 GPAC) are one triumph away from winning an outright conference regular season title.

“It’s exciting and nerve-wracking,” DeSimone said of Wednesday’s conclusion. “I was just happy and excited to have such depth at the bottom of the lineup. Isaac and Joe at 5 and 6 really played well and battled well. I knew for Joe going into that second set that he was in a good spot. He was playing his game and developing points. I had a good feeling about it.”

There are plenty of good feelings within the program these days. In the last full GPAC season (2019), the Bulldogs placed fourth in the conference with a 3-3 mark. Concordia has used superior lineup depth to climb the ladder this season. Bindl now owns a sparkling 11-1 singles record after his latest victory. After Howes won in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-3), Bindl and opponent Donat Beke had the stage all to themselves. Bindl avoided a third set and won, 6-1, 6-4.

It was a fine way to put an end to a senior night. Prior to the match, Luke Zoller and Octavio Velazquez were honored for their contributions to the program. The work of Eduardo Rojas, Howes and Bindl at the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles spots, respectively, sent everyone home happy.

Said Bindl of having the team result come down to him, “It’s definitely nerve-wracking, kind of exciting at the same time. You just have to continue to play your game and calm yourself down … I love being in that position. It’s a great win for the team.”

Concordia could afford to split the six singles matches after it earned the doubles point. The duo of Rojas and Gregor Lainer won at No. 1, 6-3, and the combo of Jack Kitson and Juan Rabellino took care of business at No. 3, 6-1. Jeremiah Berryman and Zoller competed closely at No. 2 in a 6-4 defeat.

The win guarantees that the Bulldogs will finish no worse than second in the GPAC. The program has never before won a GPAC title. A big challenge awaits next week. Said Bindl, “It feels great. Our hard work at practice is paying off. We were ready for this match and very motivated. I’m just so happy to come out 5-0 and taking on Midland next week.”

The clash with the Warriors (11-5, 4-0 GPAC) will take place next Tuesday (April 27) with first serve at 4 p.m. CT from Fremont, Neb. Midland was the preseason favorite in the GPAC and has been dominant through four conference matches. When these two sides last met in 2019, the Warriors eked out a 5-4 win.

Perfect run in GPAC ends in regular season finale

April 28, 2021

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland left no doubt that it is the top team on the GPAC men’s tennis landscape. The Warriors won two of three doubles matches and all six singles competitions in a 7-0 home victory over the Concordia University Men’s Tennis team in Fremont, Neb., on Tuesday (April 27). Both sides entered the matchup with perfect 5-0 GPAC marks.

Midland (13-5, 6-0 GPAC) won the GPAC regular season title outright while Head Coach David DeSimone’s squad (9-5, 5-1 GPAC) ends the regular season in second place in the conference.

“We played some close doubles matches, but we couldn’t quite get the point,” DeSimone said. “Jeremy (Berryman) and Luke (Zoller) played a great doubles match. In singles, we had some close matches, but lacked some firepower to take those today.”

The Bulldogs had been vying for their first conference championship since 1990. Last week’s 4-3 squeaker over Doane kept Concordia unbeaten in the GPAC at the time and set up Tuesday’s showdown. Impressively, the Warriors have won all six of their GPAC matches by scores of 7-0 or 6-1. The only match they surrendered in this go-round was at No. 2 doubles, where Berryman and Zoller eked out the decision over Tycho Janssen and Luca Struffi.

Midland won each of the singles matches in straight sets. At No. 4, Concordia’s Eduardo Rojas nearly forced a third set in a 6-1, 7-5, defeat. The Bulldog singles lineup was also made up of Gregor Lainer at No. 1, Berryman at No. 2, Zoller at No. 3, Isaac Howes at No. 5 and Joe Bindl at No. 6.

The GPAC has announced official pairings for the conference tournament that will be played on Friday and Saturday at Fremont High School. As the No. 2 seed, Concordia will have a bye to the semifinals and will await the winner between third-seeded Doane and sixth-seeded Northwestern. That semifinal match will begin at 2 p.m. CT on Friday.

As the No. 2 seed in the GPAC, the Bulldogs will await the winner between third-seeded Doane and sixth-seeded Northwestern in the GPAC semifinals on Friday. The Bulldogs earned a quarterfinal bye. All GPAC postseason matches will be played at Fremont High School in Fremont, Neb.

·        Head Coach David DeSimoine’s squad concluded the regular season on Tuesday with a 7-0 loss at regular season champion Midland. Both squads entered the matchup with 5-0 GPAC marks. Concordia had been vying for the program’s first conference title since 1990 (10 years prior to the formation of the GPAC). The Warriors were a worthy champion. They went 6-0 in GPAC play with four wins by 7-0 scores and two by finals of 6-1.

·        The Bulldogs finished above .500 in conference play for the first time since 2014 (3-2). In addition, the five GPAC wins are the most for the program since 2010. Concordia made a leap forward in 2021 largely due to its depth. Near the back of the lineup, Joe Bindl and Isaac Howes both went 5-1 in GPAC singles matches. Another three Bulldogs notched at least three GPAC singles wins: Luke Zoller (4-2), Jeremiah Berryman (3-2) and Eduardo Rojas (3-2). Over six GPAC matches, Concordia went a combined 23-13 in singles and 12-6 in doubles play.

·        Reaching the GPAC tournament final would be another significant accomplishment for the program. The semifinals have been a barrier that the Bulldogs have not been able to breach. In 2019, Concordia once again fell in the semifinals, 5-1, to Doane. The Bulldogs and Tigers may meet again in the semifinals. Doane must first defeat Northwestern in the quarterfinals in order to set up the rematch. The Bulldogs squeaked out a 4-3 win over the Tigers in the regular season.

·        By singles lineup position, Concordia has records of 3-11 at No. 1, 4-10 at No. 2, 7-7 at No. 3, 9-4 at No. 4, 11-2 at No. 5 and 8-5 at No. 6. Bindl has been especially successful while sporting an overall mark of 11-2. He is 5-0 at No. 5 and 4-2 at No. 6. Howes has the next most wins on the team with seven.

The GPAC will receive one bid to the NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championships. That bid will go to the team that wins the conference tournament. The national championships will take place May 18-22 in Mobile, Ala.

GPAC championship bid thwarted by Midland

May 1, 2021

FREMONT, Neb. – While reaching the GPAC tournament championship match, the 2021 Concordia University Men’s Tennis team broke new ground for the program. Unfortunately, its bid for a conference championship was denied by Midland in Saturday (May 1) morning’s title clash at the Fremont, Neb., YMCA. The Warriors won by a final score of 4-0.

As the No. 2 seed in the bracket, Head Coach David DeSimone’s squad reached the GPAC final with the help of a bye in the quarterfinals and then a 4-2 victory over Doane in the semifinals. The Bulldogs closed the season with a 10-6 overall mark.

“We had some tight matches today but not quite enough,” DeSimone said. “Midland came out to play today. Congrats to their players. We battled and competed well. Gregor (Lainer) played an excellent match against a great player, which gave a few of the other players some bursts of energy. We knew going in that this would be a tough match and we would need to bring our best stuff, and there were moments of that but we couldn’t sustain it.”

The experience playing all season at the No. 1 singles spot should bode well in the future for Lainer, who hung right with Miguel Abete (6-4, 3-4) in a clash that went unfinished due to the team outcome being decided. Lainer and Eduardo Rojas were also in a close competition at No. 1 doubles (trailed 5-4) when that match was called.

In addition to Lainer at No. 1, the Concordia singles lineup included Jeremiah Berryman at No. 2, Luke Zoller at No. 3, Eduardo Rojas at No. 4, Isaac Howes at No. 5 and Joe Bindl at No. 6. The No. 6 singles match had just barely gotten underway when the Warriors clinched the team win.

As the GPAC tournament champion, Midland (15-5) garnered an automatic bid to the national tournament that will be held in Mobile, Ala., May 18-22. The Warriors rolled through conference regular season play at a perfect 6-0.

As part of this season’s journey, the Bulldogs began conference play with a 5-0 mark and placed second in the regular season standings. Many of the veterans on the current team helped elevate the program from a fourth-place GPAC finish in 2019. Zoller came back for a fifth season inside the program in order to help push the ’21 squad to another level.

Said DeSimone, “Overall, I’m so proud of all that our guys have accomplished this year. These guys have accomplished so much this season. We have grown together as a family and as followers of Christ, and that is most important.”

Season to remember established program as major player within GPAC

June 15, 2021

After having the entire conference season wiped out in 2020, the Concordia University Tennis programs focused their energy on being prepared once this past fall rolled around. By the end of the spring of 2021, both the men’s and women’s teams had accomplished feats never before achieved in their programs’ histories. The Bulldogs have flirted with national tournament appearances while becoming major players within the GPAC.

Over three seasons as head coach (one shortened due to COVID-19), David DeSimone has won a combined 57 matches between the men’s and women’s teams. He’s shown an ability to develop players as they progress through the program.

“We had a great year,” DeSimone said back in early May. “There were definitely ups and downs as you could expect in a long season. I’m so proud of our teams. I’m so proud of our student-athletes for the way they competed and came together and really played their best tennis at the end of the year. We were able to grow as a team and that’s what it’s all about. The success on court is a bonus and extra for us.”

This may have been the best season ever for Concordia Tennis when factoring in the collective results of the men and women. Both teams jumped out to 5-0 GPAC records with the women sharing the GPAC regular season title and the men advancing to the GPAC tournament championship match. Never before had the women’s program won a conference title and never before had the men’s program advanced to the GPAC final. Both teams finished with exactly 10 overall wins in 2021.

The success of the two programs has had a lot to do with the development of quality players throughout the lineup. Few opponents within the GPAC have been able to match the Bulldogs one through six. Consider this: the Concordia men carried a season record of 30-12 in the Nos. 4-6 singles spots while the women went 23-8 over the Nos. 5 and 6 positions. The women won three GPAC matches by 4-3 scores. In other words, it took a team effort.

“We had great depth and great leadership,” DeSimone said. “If one person wasn’t having their day, we could count on it from someone else. That was awesome to see. The way our seniors led in their own way was really fun to be a part of. We accomplished a lot of awesome and amazing things this year. All their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. It was the work that we put in day-in, day-out in practice that allowed us to grow. Those seniors and juniors stepped up and lead and helped show the freshmen and sophomores what it means to be part of the Concordia Tennis team and what it will take to reach our goals.”

A combined 12 Bulldogs wound up earning some form of all-conference recognition. Claudia Miranda Viera (6-1 singles; 6-1 doubles vs. GPAC) and Sofia Morales (5-2 singles; 7-0 doubles vs. GPAC) led the way for the women as All-GPAC performers in singles and doubles. On the men’s side, Joseph Bindl put together an 11-2 singles record with one of his 11 victories clinching a tight home win over Doane. Luke Zoller returned to the program for a fifth year and put up seven singles wins while playing in several different spots in the lineup.

For the women, a 6-1 loss to Doane on April 20 prevented them from an outright GPAC title. However, they bounced back a week later with a 4-3 win at Midland that clinched a share of the conference championship. On April 30 at the GPAC tournament, the men got past Doane in the semifinals, 4-2, representing a momentous win for the program. The next day, the Bulldogs fell to a strong Midland squad that swept conference regular season and postseason titles.

In late April, Concordia celebrated a group of seniors that featured Zoller and Octavio Velazquez on the men’s side and Ansley Gates, Miranda Viera and Katie Seja on the women’s side. Each of them had a hand in lifting up their respective programs. The Bulldog women’s seniors were also part of a 2019 squad that broke a school record for wins in a season (15) and advanced to the GPAC tournament final, dropping a 5-4 decision to Hastings.

The bar has been raised for both programs. The hunt for GPAC titles and the first-ever appearances at the national championships in Mobile, Ala., will continue.

Said DeSimone, “We’re excited for next year. We’re still taking some time to soak up all that this season has meant and really reflect on it. We are looking forward to next year. We have a lot of returners coming back for our men and a decent number of returners for our women. It will be a fun year where we can continue to build on all the good stuff we’ve put together this year. I’ve talked a lot to those returners about setting the standard and leading, especially with a handful of first-year players coming in. We need to show them all what it’s going to take to get back to where we were this year and build on the success we’ve had.”
