For information on how to join BAAM, click HERE. It is not a requirement to be a BAAM member in order to attend the weekly luncheons.

Burtwistle grows into one of nation’s top setters: It took a degree of patience and persistence, but Bree Burtwistle has established herself as one of the very best setters in the NAIA. The Stanton, Neb., native sat out in the fall semester of 2020 after transferring from Midland and then learned from Tara Callahan while preparing for this moment. With the help of Burtwistle, the Bulldogs enter this week with a 14-1 overall record (5-1 GPAC). For more on Burtwistle’s journey, click HERE.

Shooting Sports places third at Prairie Circuit Championships, readies to host own invitational: Concordia Shooting Sports placed third at the Prairie Circuit Conference Championships held in North Platte, Neb., Sept. 23-25. Among the highlights, Angeline Wolfert starred as the top female freshman, Breyer Meeks led the Bulldogs in terms of overall scoring and Wayne Moore shot a perfect 100 in trap. Wolfert and Meeks were two of six Bulldog to garner all-conference awards. The Bulldogs wound up placing just behind Fort Hays State University (1,879) and Midland (1,850) in the race for the conference championship. Concordia won the Prairie Circuit title as recently as 2020 and then placed second in 2021. Next up for Head Coach Dylan Owens’ squad is the Concordia Bulldog Sporting Invitational at Oak Creek Sporting Club in Brainard, Neb., this Saturday and Sunday. Women win, men fall in fall tennis home openers: Head Coach Cam Long’s Concordia Tennis programs hosted their fall home opener this past Saturday while welcoming Iowa Central Community College to Seward. The women earned a 5-2 win while the men lost by that same exact final score. For the women’s team, three Bulldogs picked up wins in both singles and doubles as the team evened its season record at 1-1. Meanwhile, the men conceded five of six singles matches to the Tritons after having won the team doubles point. The men’s team also stands at 1-1 with the victory having come at Bethel College (Kan.). Up next on the schedule is the NAIA Central-West ITA Regional Championship this Friday through Sunday in Wichita, Kan. Both teams are also slated to host William Jewell College (Mo.) on Saturday, Oct. 8. For more information on the Bulldog tennis teams, including recaps from fall action, click here: MEN | WOMEN.

Lifting Sports schedule adjustments: There have been a couple adjustments to the Concordia Lifting Sports schedules since the semester began. Notably, the Midland Warrior Open (powerlifting) was moved up a week and will now be held on Oct. 8. In addition, the powerlifting team will also be in Fremont, Neb., on Jan. 28 for the Nebraska State Championships (instead of heading to Des Moines, Iowa, the following weekend). These changes are noted on the team’s online schedules. Head Coach Freddie Myles’ program began weightlifting competition back on Sept. 10 at the MidAmerica Nazarene University Open. For more details on the program, click HERE.

Schulze left a legacy ‘back in my day’: In a different era of Bulldog Athletics, Bob Schulze left a legacy as a four-sport athlete. Schulze may not have known exactly what he was getting into, but 58 years after his graduation from Concordia, he knows that God led him to the perfect place. Said Schulze during his Concordia Athletic Hall of Fame induction speech on Sept. 16, “I can use the term, ‘back in the day,’ because that’s me. I am a ‘back in the day’ athlete. I wouldn’t trade a second of my time here at Concordia.” For more on Schulze’s accomplishments as a Bulldog, click HERE.

Cross Country

·        In what will be the only instance of it this season, the Bulldogs competed in back-to-back weeks with the Dean White Invitational (Sept. 24) coming immediately following the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational (Sept. 17). As part of the smaller scale meet hosted by Doane, the Concordia women took first place out of four teams while the men were edged by Doane in what was essentially a dual meet. Leading the way, Camden Sesna won the Dean White championship on the men’s side. Head Coach Matt Beisel’s squads have competed in three meets so far in 2022. For more information on Concordia Cross Country, click HERE.

·        Heading into the Dean White meet, the Bulldogs had made a big move in the national rankings. As unveiled with the release of the NAIA coaches’ polls on Sept. 22, Concordia landed at No. 17 on the women’s side and fell just outside of the top 25 (28th) on the men’s side. This marks the fourth straight season that the Bulldog women’s program has found its way into the top 25 at some point during the fall. On the other hand, the men’s program hopes to crack the NAIA top 25 for the first time since the 2014 season. Concordia is seeking to qualify both the men’s and women’s teams for nationals in the same season for the first time since 2009.

·        The women’s program notched its first team meet championship since winning the 2021 Morningside College Invite. The Bulldogs did so while following the lead of reigning GPAC Runner of the Week Kylahn Freiberg, who finished behind only a competitor from York College. Concordia was without two of its top runners in Rylee Haecker and Julie McIntyre. In their absence, the Bulldogs showed off their depth as two freshmen ran with the team’s top five. Freiberg ran the 5k in 19:34.59. Freiberg has been the team’s No. 1 runner at each of the first three meets.

·        The Concordia top five that followed Freiberg included Hannah Beintema (20:09.16), Rhaya Kaschinske (20:32.31), Keegan Beisel (20:38.91) and Amie Martin (21:22.09). Bulldog runners six through 10 were packed tight: Jaiden Tweton (21:28.20), Faith Williamson (21:37.34), Courtney Wright (21:40.99), Bella Marchisio (21:41.27) and Sammi Vojslavek (22:22.40). Twenty-one Concordia women paced the course this past Saturday.

·        It was essentially a dual on the men’s side as Doane edged the Bulldogs, 25-30. A two-time GPAC Runner of the Week this season, Sesna took the individual title while running the 8k in 25:58.52. Sesna had run 25:22.3 a week earlier at the Greeno/Dirksen Invite. In the latest trot, Sesna was joined in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard by teammates Calvin Rohde (26:26.46), Jimmy Nguyen (27:17.28), Thomas Gorline (27:50.79) and Charlie Hayden (27:56.62).

·        Through three meets, the Concordia women have beat every NAIA opponent they have seen. The men’s squad had done the same until being narrowly defeated by Doane this past week. At the Augustana Twilight, the women placed ninth out of 28 teams while the men finished 12th out of 32 teams. Two weeks later, Concordia was amongst the best teams in the “Gold Division” of the Greeno/Dirksen Invite, placing third out of 19 teams on the women’s side and sixth out of 21 teams on the men’s side.

·        This week will offer a break from competition with no meet scheduled this week. The next race on the slate will be the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Dordt on Saturday, Oct. 8. The gun is set to go off at 10 a.m. CT from Sioux Center, Iowa, on that date. The Mount Marty Invite on Oct. 22 will serve as the final meet prior to the GPAC Championships.

Golf

·        It was a busy week of action for the women’s team, which played at the Matthew Goette Fall Classic (Sept. 21) and the Nebraska Wesleyan Fall Classic (Sept. 24-25). Meanwhile, the men were idle last week. The Concordia women placed fourth out of six teams at the Goette Classic and then third out of eight teams at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite. Head Coach Brett Muller’s squad posted a season low score of 334 this past Saturday in Lincoln. Only one event remains on the fall schedule for both teams. For more information on Concordia Golf: Men | Women.

·        In highlighting the team’s efforts at the Goette Classic, Mya Nurse (ninth) and Emery Custer (10th) earned top 10 individual medals. Nurse and Custer shared eighth place overall at the event (but were bumped to ninth and 10th, respectively, after the tiebreaker was factored in) by carding an identical score of 12-over-par 84. This marked the second career top 10 tournament finish for Nurse, the native of West Des Moines, Iowa. As for Custer, a freshman from Broken Bow, Neb., this was her first career top 10 tournament claim. Next in Concordia’s lineup of five were Lauren Havlat (88; T-16th), Logan Eschliman (89; 18th) and Sarah Wilson (96; 26th).

·        In the process of placing third at the NWU Invite, the Bulldog women shot 334-352–686. Only Central College (Iowa) (321-309–630) and Mount Marty (328-331–659) outperformed Concordia. The 334 represented a season low by 10 strokes over the previous best of 344 at the Lila Frommelt Fall Classic. In shooting a 77 (five over par) on day one of the NWU Invite, Havlat achieved one of her goals of breaking into the 70s. The Norris High School product has slashed her season scoring average of 89.3 from 2021-22 down to 83.3 this fall. She’s placed in the top 20 of all four events this fall. Meanwhile, Custer shot a team low round on Sunday with an 83, pushing her into a tie for 19th on the final leaderboard. The Broken Bow, Neb., native carded 84-83–167 for the tournament. The rest of the five-person lineup included Nurse (84-89–173; T-23rd), Eschliman (89-95–184; 34th) and Wilson (94-95–189; T-37th).

·        If the Bulldog men can click at the right time, they can challenge for a conference championship. In a field loaded with GPAC competition at the Siouxland Invite (Sept. 12-13), Concordia finished third among conference schools with a three-round total of 294-297-285–876. That total put it within shouting distance of Northwestern (866) and Morningside (871). Through eight rounds of official varsity action this fall, the Bulldogs have averaged a team score of 289.6. That figure puts them on track to shatter the program single season record of 305.1 from 2021-22. The team’s low round so far this season was a 283 at the UC Ferguson Classic.

·        After earning a fifth-place medal at the Blue River Classic the previous week, Jacob Woodmancy continued his strong play near the top of the lineup. Woodmancy found himself in a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard following Monday’s 36 holes. The Grant, Neb., native wound up sharing 15th place with a three-day score of 72-73-73–218. The Omaha native Yabut leapfrogged Woodmancy on the final tote board while shooting 71-75-69–215. Yabut’s two-under-par 69 moved him into a tie for 10th place, signaling his first top 10 tournament finish of the fall.

·        Following Yabut and Woodmancy, the next three in the ‘A’ group at the Siouxland Invite were Drew D’Ercole (75-76-72–223; T-27th), Jake Richmond (76-73-74–223; T-27th) and Justin Webert (77-79-71–227). Drew D’Ercole had entered the tournament as the team’s season scoring average in a close race at the top. As for the second grouping of Bulldogs, they shot 314-304-304–922 and placed 10th at the invite. The No. 1 golfer on the ‘B’ team was sophomore Josh D’Ercole (72-78-75–225; T-36th).

·        The final event of the fall season is coming up this Friday and Saturday when the Nebraska Intercollegiate will be held at Norfolk Country Club in Norfolk, Neb. The tournament features both women’s and men’s golf teams from Nebraska colleges and universities. The 2022-23 season will then pick back up in the spring of 2023. The spring portion of the slate has not yet been announced.

Volleyball

·        The Bulldogs are rolling along with four straight GPAC wins in straight sets. Not that the rankings are crucial at this juncture, but had Concordia finished off the fifth set at Midland on Sept. 7, it may have been on the brink of being ranked No. 1 in the NAIA. However, the Bulldogs are due to move up from No. 8 after last week taking care of business on the road with quick victories over Mount Marty (Sept. 21) and No. 14 Dordt (Sept. 24). Head Coach Ben Boldt’s squad enters this week at 14-1 overall (5-1 GPAC). For more information on Concordia Volleyball, click HERE.

·        Since their only loss this season, the Bulldogs have responded with straight sets wins over Doane, No. 13 College of Saint Mary, Mount Marty and No. 14 Dordt. While going by the current top 25 rankings, Concordia has defeated five ranked foes: No. 9 Viterbo University (Wis.), No. 13 CSM, No. 14 Dordt, No. 17 Southern Oregon University and No. 24 Texas Wesleyan University. Plenty more opportunities for quality wins are coming up with seven GPAC teams currently ranked in the NAIA top 25.

·        In the visit to Mount Marty, the Bulldogs were pushed in the first set by the Lancers. It was 23-all when Gabi Nordaker and Camryn Opfer supplied back-to-back kills to end the threat. From there, Concordia dominated in taking the match, 25-23, 25-13, 25-16, while outhitting Mount Marty, .314 to .162. Nordaker hit .632 with 13 kills and three of her teammates notched at least six kills: Ashley Keck (nine), Opfer (nine) and Carly Rodaway (six). Other statistical leaders were Rodaway in blocks (four), Bree Burtwistle in assists (39) and digs (13) and Rebecca Gebhardt in aces (three).

·        The match at Dordt was a bit like the one at Mount Marty in that the first set was the one that most tested the Bulldogs’ resolve. A 22-15 lead was cut to 22-19 before a key service error. Rodaway and Opfer put away kills for point Nos. 24 and 25, respectively, and Concordia was on its way to another impressive road victory. The Bulldogs outhit the Defenders, .345 to .248, behind 14 kills from Opfer, who hit .414 from the outside. Nordaker again sizzled while hitting .647 and accumulating 11 kills (no errors). In the middle, Kalee Wiltfong (10 kills) also did not commit an error. Burtwistle piled up 46 more assists and 10 digs. Opfer led the way with 15 digs and Kennedy VanScoy landed a pair of aces.

·        It’s become a real chore for opponents trying to match Concordia’s firepower. On the NAIA national leaderboards, the Bulldogs rank second in hitting percentage (.282) and third in kills per set (14.19). Concordia also now boasts five hitters with at least 100 kills this season: Nordaker (174), Opfer (150), Rodaway (134), Keck (133) and Wiltfong (102). While feeding the attack, Burtwistle is averaging 11.37 assists per set, third most in the nation. On Sept. 20, Burtwistle was recognized as the GPAC and NAIA National Setter of the Week.

·        After two on the road last week, the Bulldogs will be at home for two this week. Concordia will host Briar Cliff (5-8, 0-4 GPAC) at 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday before welcoming Morningside (6-13, 2-4 GPAC) for a 3 p.m. match on Saturday. The Saturday contest will also be used to celebrate the Bulldog senior class, which includes Bree Burtwistle, Bree Green, Mary Nibbe, Camryn Opfer, Kennedy VanScoy and Kalee Wiltfong. Each have played a role for a program primed to qualify for the national tournament for a fourth year in a row.

Men’s Soccer

·        There was one up and one down in a week that saw the Bulldogs be a bit too generous in helping their foes find the back of the net. However, Concordia showed resilience in responding to a 4-3 loss at Dordt on Sept. 21 with a 2-1 comeback win over defending GPAC regular season champion Northwestern on Sept. 24. The key now will be for Head Coach Jason Weides’ squad to find consistency within league play. The Bulldogs currently stand at 7-2 overall (2-1 GPAC). For more information on Concordia Men’s Soccer, click HERE.

·        Seemingly every Bulldog game so far in 2022 has been tense down to the very last seconds. Seven of the team’s first nine games have been decided by one-goal margins with the only exceptions being 2-0 Concordia victories over both York College and Bethany College (Kan.). An encouraging sign has been the ability of the Bulldogs to emerge victorious in the close ones. They are 5-2 in the seven matches decided by a single goal. Eventually, Concordia expects a larger goal outburst. Its season high of three goals has been attained twice.

·        Not since 2016 had the Bulldogs conceded four or more goals in a single game. In other words, the final result at Dordt came as a surprise to members of the program. Mistakes in the back end played a role in the Defenders piling up four goals in a back-and-forth affair. Concordia squandered leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in Sioux Center. The Bulldog goals were put on the board by Martin Herrera, Carlos Orquiz and Dominic Abdel-Ahad. The game winner for Dordt came in the 84th minute when Blake Hansen quickly took advantage of a turnover.

·        It was looking like it may be an 0-2 week with the Bulldogs trailing Northwestern, 1-0, into the 84th minute of this past Saturday’s matchup played inside Bulldog Stadium. That’s when Ryan Wokutch came to the rescue. He headed in an Orquiz free kick in the 84th minute and then used his track speed to outrun the Red Raider back line and score in the 87th minute. Wokutch’s emergence helped relieve the frustration of the goal Concordia had allowed in the 28th minute after some goalkeeper-defender miscommunication. The Bulldogs outshot Northwestern, 15-8.

·        Through nine games, Concordia has outscored its opponents by a combined total of 16-9. Orquiz paces the team with four goals (three on penalty kicks). He’s followed by Abdel-Ahad (three), Wokutch (three) and Miguel Navarro (two). The following Bulldogs have scored one goal this season: Herrera, Jarrod Henson, Carter Hinman and Matt Schultz. While Isaiah Shaddick is still looking for his first goal of 2022, he leads the team with three assists. Abdel-Ahad has been the team’s most active attacker with 18 total shots (eight on goal). As for the keepers, Callum Goldsmith, Gabriel Mendoza and Federico Simonetti have each made at least two starts.

·        Just like last week, Concordia will be on the road for a mid-week game and then home on Saturday. The Bulldogs will be at Midland (5-1-2, 1-1-1 GPAC) for a 7:15 p.m. CT kickoff on Wednesday. They will then turn around and host Dakota Wesleyan (1-6-1, 0-2 GPAC) at 3:30 p.m. In last season’s meetings, Concordia was edged by the Warriors, 1-0, and routed the Tigers, 5-1.

Women’s Soccer

·        There were no wins or losses last week as the Bulldogs settled for draws with both Dordt, 1-1, and Northwestern, 0-0. The contest against Dordt was played on the road on Sept. 21 while the matchup with the Red Raiders took place at home on Sept. 24. Due to rule changes made prior to the start of the 2022 season, no overtime sessions are played during the regular season. Head Coach Thomas Goines’ squad remains undefeated with an overall mark of 6-0-2 (1-0-1 GPAC). For more information on Concordia Women’s Soccer, click HERE.

·        No other Bulldog team had gone more than six games without a loss to begin a season. In other words, the ’22 squad has continued to extend a school record unbeaten streak. The two ties did prevent Concordia from reaching the program record for longest win streak, which was eight by the 2016 squad. The longest overall unbeaten streak of 17 was rattled off by the ’17 team that owns the program’s only GPAC regular season title. The Bulldogs are currently the lone team in the GPAC without a loss.

·        Frustration comes from the feeling that both of last week’s outings could have easily been put in the win column. In the tie at Dordt, Concordia surrendered a goal with 66 seconds remaining. The goal from Ellie Eason in the 31st minute had given the Bulldogs a lead that stood right up until the 89-minute mark. The host Defenders had slight advantages in shots, 9-8, and corners, 4-3. In goal, Kalie “Rocket” Ward made six saves in the near clean sheet. Star Concordia freshman Kierstynn Garner was held off the goal scoring ledger despite putting two shots on frame.

·        If the Bulldogs could have mustered even one goal versus Northwestern, they could have easily laughed off the series of near misses on the attack. Concordia thoroughly dominated possession and owned an 18-5 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs even failed to convert a penalty kick that they were awarded in the 52nd minute. While they didn’t have to play much defense, Concordia got the shutout with the help of star center back Grace Soenksen and the veteran keeper Ward. The Red Raiders put only two shots on goal the entire 90 minutes.

·        While the goal scoring ran a bit dry last week, the Bulldogs have surrendered just one goal since Sept. 6, a span of five games. Overall this season, Concordia has outscored its opponents by a combined total of 21-5. Garner remains the team’s leading goal scorer with seven goals. Four of her teammates have produced multiple goals: Lina Kirst (three), Aliyah Aldama (two), Eason (two) and Elena Ruiz (two). The team leader for assists is Niah Kirchner with three. At keeper, Ward owns an impressive goals against average of 0.54 and a save percentage of .880.

·        The unbeaten streak will be put to the test this week in a road game at Midland (3-3-3, 1-1-1 GPAC) at 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday and in Saturday’s 1 p.m. home battle with Dakota Wesleyan (2-4-1, 0-3 GPAC). In last season’s meetings, the Bulldogs earned a 1-0 win over Midland and were beaten at Dakota Wesleyan, 1-0. Goines remains at 99 wins during his collegiate head coaching career.

Football

·        It most certainly was a tale of two halves in last week’s road trip to fourth-ranked Northwestern. The Bulldogs built a 10-0 halftime advantage with the help of four turnovers forced over the first 30 minutes. The Red Raider offense then broke out in the second half and powered a 34-10 victory for the home team. There were some positives for Head Coach Patrick Daberkow’s squad, which now will try to dig out of an 0-3 start to the 2022 campaign. For more information on Concordia Football, click HERE.

·        The Bulldogs have owned a lead of at least seven points in each of their first three games. They led Doane, 7-0, Hastings, 17-2, and Northwestern, 10-0. In each instance, the offense has struggled to add to the advantage. Concordia is averaging 12.3 points and 267.3 yards per game through the first three outings. If there’s a positive the Bulldogs can draw upon, it’s that the 2021 team opened up at 1-3 before closing the season with a six-game win streak. The Bulldogs also can look forward to playing four of their last seven games at home.

·        The second half was a dominant one for Northwestern, which went to the half with 132 total yards of offense. By the end of the contest, that number had jumped to 515. Red Raider backup quarterback Jalyn Gramstad had a hand in many of the second half yards. He went 9-for-11 passing for 179 yards and a touchdown and rushed 15 times for 177 yards and four touchdowns. Starting quarterback Blake Fryar left early after he went 5-for-14 for 51 yards and was picked off twice – once apiece by Jayzen Armstrong and Luke Sanchez. The Red Raiders wound up winning comfortably despite being minus-four in turnover margin.

·        Korrell Koehlmoos keeps padding career receiving totals that rank among the best in school history. After snagging a career high 11 catches for 108 yards at Northwestern, his career totals now stand at 145 receptions for 2,133 yards and 14 touchdowns. Each of those numbers rank within the top five on program all-time lists. The native of Pilger, Neb., has also enjoyed a fine season from a punting perspective. He’s punted 22 times for an average of 43.0 yards with six attempts downed inside the 20.

·        Concordia may have caught Northwestern by surprise, at least initially, with some of its offensive looks last week. DJ McGarvie got the start at quarterback while Austin Jablonski moved into a receiving role. Jablonski scored the lone Bulldog touchdown on a four-yard rush. McGarvie finished 20-for-44 for 210 yards through the air. He posted solid number through the first half before things became more of a slog in the second half. McGarvie has 19 career touchdown passes to his credit.

·        The turnovers were key to the first half lead last week. Northwestern had not coughed the football up even once prior to this past Saturday. At linebacker, Michael Grindey is doing his best Lane Napier impression. He made seven tackles last week and pushed his season total to a team high 34. While Armstrong and Sanchez both picked off a pass, a forced fumble was credited to each of the following players: Stephen Hughes, Kam Baker and Devon Polley.

·        Before a string of October home games, the Bulldogs will be in Mitchell, S.D., on Saturday to take on Dakota Wesleyan (0-5, 0-4 GPAC) at 1 p.m. CT. Both teams will be in search of their first win of the season. Concordia would be happy to duplicate last season’s result versus DWU, a 34-0 win in Seward. McGarvie fueled that victory offensively by throwing for three touchdowns and running for two more.
