GPAC Duals Preview

SEWARD, Neb. – This Saturday, Jan. 30, the Concordia University wrestling team will travel to the University of Jamestown (N.D) to compete in the GPAC Duals. The bulldogs will wrestle conference opponents Briar Cliff, Jamestown, Doane, and Hastings. Wrestling will start at 9 a.m. (C T) and continue until the completion of the event.

·        vs. Briar Cliff (4-4 Overall, 3-1 GPAC), at 9 a.m.

·        vs. Jamestown (2-4 Overall, 2-1 GPAC), at 12 a.m.

·        vs. Doane University (10-2 Overall, 3-0 GPAC), at 1:30 p.m.

·        vs. Hasting College (1-8 Overall, 1-2 GPAC), at 3:00 p.m.

The Bulldogs will enter the weekend with an overall record of 4-7 (2-2 GPAC). Last weekend, Concordia had a bye week due to the cancelation of the Missouri Valley Invite. In the team’s most recent competition, the Bulldogs went 1-2 with a win over Waldorf in three duals that took place at Northwestern on Jan. 16

Three Concordia wrestlers are currently nationally ranked: No. 8 Mario Ybarra at 133, No. 20 Issiah Burks at 157, and No. 17 Jacob Telles at 285. At the conference level, eight out of the ten weights a wrestler is ranked in the top six. The group includes top ranked wrestler Ybarra who is currently ranked No. 1 at 133 in the GPAC. Along side him ranked No.2 in the GPAC are his teammates Burks at 157, and Telles at 285.

After the Northwestern duals, Concordia currently sits in fifth place out of the nine teams in the GPAC.  The top four in the league standing are Morningside at No. 1, Doane at No. 2, Briar Cliff at No. 3, and Jamestown at No. 4.

In Saturday’s action, Concordia will be up against several nationally ranked wrestlers. Starting off with Briar Cliffs, ranked wrestlers including No.15 CaRon Warson at 125, No. 18 Chris Paulson at 165, and No. 14 Caleb Shanks at 197.  Now, for Doane the wrestlers that are ranked are as follows: No. 13 at 125 Daniel Vargas, No. 1 at 141 Baterdene Boldmaa, No. 15 at 149 Tristan Zamilpa, No.16 at 174 Michael Scarponi, No. 18 Bradley Antesbergerat 197, and No. 8 Brandon Antesberger at 285. Lastly for Hastings is No. 10 Taygen Smith at 157lbs and, No. 11 Edrich Nortje at 141.

Next on the schedule is a home dual against York College, which is set for Thursday, Feb. 4 inside Friedrich Area. More information will be released next week. Consistent with local COVID-19 Health Guidelines, Concorida will allow up to 50 percent capacity in the arena.
