Dawgs hungry to host Broncos Friday

By Chase Benton on Nov. 14, 2023 in Wrestling

SEWARD, Neb. – After having wrestled in a couple of tournaments, the Bulldogs will return home for their second dual in Friedrich Arena against Hastings on Friday (Nov. 17). The dual is set to get underway at 7 p.m. CT. Preseason ranked No. 6 in the conference, Concordia has jumped up to No. 5 after adding four new ranked wrestlers with Martim Moniz (5th at 125), Grant Wells (5th at 133), Tracy Allen (5th at 149) and Hunter Wiemer (5th at 184). Landing at No. 3 in the GPAC at the end of the year has shown the potential under Head Coach Chase Clasen to return to the top of GPAC despite a preseason low ranking almost a month ago.

Concordia wrestled in the Luther Hill Invite and the Grand View Open with Moniz (at 125) going 7-4 through the past two tournaments. Baughman (141), a second year transfer from Iowa Western Community College, grabbed first place at Luther Hill completing an undefeated day (3-0) in the tournament and has a 6-2 record so far this season. Brandt (165), a freshman from Syracuse, Neb., collected third at Luther Hill with all five wins by pinfall. He fell by pin in his first match at Grand View but followed it up with five more straight wins by a finalizing slap of the mat, pushing his record to 11-2 (all pinfalls) on the season.

Weimer (184) took first at the Luther Hill invite, winning three straight at the weekend wrestle fest, and has a record of 4-2 in the 2023 season. Wells (133) grabbed second place after falling in his final bout by decision in his first loss of the year. The product Lincoln Lutheran High School, won his first four total matches and has an 8-3 overall record after a strong showing at Grand View earning sixth place.

Hastings comes into the matchup having lost both of their national qualifiers from last season in Kavika Aholelei and Cole Maschmann. Trey Heckadon will begin his first year as head coach of the Broncos and wrestled at Graceland University (Iowa) as a two-time national qualifier. In Hastings’ first tournament, Jake Patterson (157) had a good showing in the York Open taking first place (2-0) and Naim Abeuljubean (174) went 2-1 in the open, falling in the final by one point. The Dawgs came out on top with a dominating 36-10 victory over the Broncos in the last dual matchup in 2022.
