SEWARD, Neb. – The third home dual of the 2023-24 season for Concordia University Wrestling is on the docket for Friday night. The Bulldogs are getting set to square off with Bethany College (Kan.) inside Friedrich Arena at 7 p.m. CT that evening. Eight total GPAC duals took place in Sioux City, Iowa, on Nov. 21 in an event dubbed “GPAC Duals Day No. 1.” The Bulldogs still had a shot at claiming team wins heading into the heavyweight clash in both of their duals. Concordia ultimately wound up enduring losses by scores of 24-16 to Dakota Wesleyan and 29-18 to No. 5 Morningside. In headlining the day for the Bulldogs, 141-pounder Creighton Baughman went 2-0 and earned a 4-1 decision over No. 12 Taylor Vasquez of Morningside. Other contested victories for Concordia on Nov. 21 were delivered by Brent Ward (decision at 157), Mason Garcia (major decision at 197), Bryson Bussinger (pin at 125) and Tommy Wentz (decision at 165).

The schedule to date for the Bulldogs has included four duals and three tournaments. Over the season’s first month, six Concordia wrestlers have put at least seven wins on the board: Barret Brandt (15-4), Grant Wells (10-4), Baughman (9-2), Jeaven Scdoris (8-3), Martim Moniz (7-5) and Tommy Wentz (7-4). A freshman from Syracuse, Neb., Brandt has already accumulated 14 pins. The school record for most pins in a season is 21. As of the GPAC ratings released three weeks ago, the Bulldogs boast nine competitors ranked at the conference level. Baughman remains the NAIA’s 10th-ranked 141-pounder.

Concordia will welcome Bethany to Seward for a second year in a row. The two programs also met up in December of 2022 with the result being a 36-9 Bulldog win. The Swedes compete as a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and are coached by Mitch Houghton (third season). Bethany’s roster features five wrestlers who are currently ranked at the conference level (see below). So far this season, the Swedes are 0-2 in duals with losses having come against Ottawa University (Kan.), 52-3, and Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 41-12. Bethany has been idle since the Younes Hospitality Open (hosted by UNK) on Nov. 18.
