LINCOLN, Neb. – Concordia University, Nebraska Women’s Tennis showed complete dominance in singles at the GPAC Fall individual tournament. Freshman Seohyeon Jang made her presence felt early in the conference playoff by winning the top singles and doubles draw with veteran Chakira Derman. The Seward roster won four of the five singles brackets at Woods Tennis Center over the weekend (Sept. 11-12).
"Extremely impressed with how we competed in every bracket this past weekend," Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "We showed tremendous competitive spirit and played the big points extremely well. We are looking forward to the ITA Championships in a couple of weeks."
After receiving a first round bye, newcomer Jang won all three of her matches in consecutive sets to take the GPAC singles title in the top draw. The Seoul, South Korea, native defeated Ai Katsura (Midland), 6-1, 6-0, Line Jensen (Morningside), 7-5, 6-1, and Maria Purizaca (Doane), 6-3, 6-2, for the championship.
Jang paired with Chakira in the top doubles bracket winning four straight doubles sets to go undefeated. The pair gave up only one game before the championship including wins of 6-0, 6-0, 6-1. Jang and Chakira defeated Jensen and Brooke Marshall (Morningside), 6-4, for the Fall GPAC doubles crown.
Chakira went 3-1 in singles making the final in second draw. Derman defeated Marshall (6-1, 3-6, 10-6) in the semifinals and claimed runner up after falling to Maeva Chambon (2-6, 5-7).
Ishane Derman seized the title in draw three going unbeaten (3-0) over her opposition. The Lomé, Togo, native overcame two Mustangs in the last two rounds to defeat Bianca Seminario (4-6, 6-2, 10-8) and Jennifer Hubert (6-2, 6-2). Ishane and Alexa Richert were paired in doubles two draw going 2-0 before the bracket was stopped.
In singles draw four, Bulldogs’ Richert (4-0) and Nina Milic (2-1) met in the final. The Gillette, Wyo., native, won out 6-2, 6-2, in the all-Concordia title match.
Milic and Jacey Powell (2-1) made the doubles draw two semifinals before dropping their match set (3-6) to Hubert and Ellie Peterson (Morningside).
In singles draw five, three of the top four sported Bulldog blue including Powell (4-0), Erin Nordby (2-1) and Mia Hume (2-1). Powell and Nordby would duke it out with Powell coming out on top (6-0, 6-1).
Hume and Nordby went 1-1 in doubles in Lincoln.
Concordia will travel back to Salina, Kan., to for the ITA NAIA Central-West Regional Championships from Sept. 25-27. The Bulldogs will compete at Salina High School for the chance to make ITA Nationals held in Rome, Ga., on Oct. 15-18.
