Gates, Esquivel claim wins in team loss at Baker

LAWRENCE, Kan. – In a final venture outside of conference play this regular season, Concordia University Women’s Tennis went up against Baker University in a match played at Geneses Health Club in Lawrence, Kan., on Thursday (April 8). The Bulldogs earned a singles win apiece courtesy of Ansley Gates and Luisa Esquivel, but fell by a final team score of 5-2. Singles matches followed an eight-game set format.

In its most recent action, Head Coach David DeSimone’s squad had claimed back-to-back GPAC wins over Morningside and Hastings. With Thursday’s defeat, Concordia slipped to 5-5 overall.

Said DeSimone, “Ansley and Luisa had good wins at 5 and 6, respectively. Both played very smart, composed tennis and I was happy to see them make the most of their opportunities against good opponents.”

The Wildcats (5-7) gained the advantage in doubles by sweeping all three matches. Then in singles, Gates topped Chassidy Weathers, 8-2, at No. 5 and Esquivel defeated Taylor Jarvis, 8-5. The top four spots in the Bulldog lineup featured Sofia Morales at No. 1, Claudia Miranda Viera at No. 2, Tara Ferrel at No. 3 and Katy Krejci at No. 4. The most competitive of those matches came at No. 1, where Kayelee Smith edged Morales, 8-5.

Conference play will resume on Saturday when Concordia hosts Mount Marty (2-3, 0-1 GPAC) with first serve set for 11 a.m. CT from the Bulldog Tennis Courts. The Lancers opened up GPAC action with a 6-1 loss at Midland on March 27.
