Bulldogs fall in spring opener to UNO

OMAHA, Neb. – Concordia University, Nebraska Women’s Tennis competed against the University of Nebraska-Omaha at Miracle Hill Tennis Center on Friday (Jan. 23). The Bulldogs fell to the Mavericks, 0-7, in a shutout to open the spring season of 2026.

Concordia is 2-1 on the campaign with the first two wins coming in the fall versus Nebraska Wesleyan University and Wartburg College (Iowa).

“Very proud of how we competed today,” Head Coach Lisa Hart said. “Even though we didn’t come out victorious today, we took a step forward today in terms of our overall development. We will go back to work as we look forward to our home opener on February 7.”

Alana Lopez Pagan and Chakira Derman at No. 2s, fell in the first doubles match to finish (1-6). No. 1s Ishane Derman and Mariana Molano dropped their first doubles match of the season (2-6) to Nina Wiese and Katelynn Kock. No. 3s Alexa Richert and Nina Milic did not finish.

UNO’s Shelby Smith at No. 4, defeated Richert (6-0, 6-1). Jacey Powell, a Concordia University Ann Arbor transfer, was inserted in the bottom of the lineup at No. 6. Powell was bested by Grace Greenwald (1-6, 2-6) in straight sets. Prepped at John F. Kennedy High, Powell was in the singles lineup for the first time as a Bulldog.

Concordia’s Milic at No. 5 seized two games in the first set but couldn’t find her swing against Summer Shannon (2-6, 0-6). Molano at No. 1 went for her 41st career win but was outclassed (1-6, 0-6) by the NCAA Division I foe Wiese.

No. 2 Chakira gave her best shot but fell (0-6, 1-6) to Kock and No. 3 Lopez Pagan dropped her match in consecutive rounds (3-6, 0-6).

Concordia (2-1) will face Sterling College (Kan.) inside Walz Fieldhouse on Saturday (Feb. 7). The Bulldogs will hit first serve at 10 a.m. CT.
