SEWARD, Neb. – On a sun-soaked day on campus, the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team got on the board with its first win of the 2022-23 season. The Bulldogs got the upper hand on Iowa Central Community College in doubles play and then took four of six singles decisions while winning, 5-2, on Saturday (Sept. 24) afternoon. Three Concordia players picked up wins in both singles and doubles.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has evened its dual record at 1-1 this fall season, which also included an individual, singles/doubles bracket-style GPAC tournament. The Bulldogs were narrowly defeated at Bethel College (Kan.), 4-3, on Sept. 13.

Concordia picked up the doubles point on Saturday thanks to the work of Gabrielle Heiser and Kylie Freudenburg at No. 2. The teamed up on a 6-3 victory. The Bulldogs also won at No. 3 (Brooke Hosick and Lauren Gottberg) due to forfeit. At the No. 1 spot, the Tritons came away with a 6-2 victory over the duo of Ella Dean and Tara Ferrel.

Then in singles action, Concordia earned three contested wins while clinching the team triumph. The victories were delivered by Mariana Molano at No. 1, Hosick at No. 4, Gottberg at No. 5 and Freudenburg at No. 6. Molano held off her counterpart in a tiebreaker in a hotly contested battle at the top of the lineup. Collectively, Molano and company helped avenge the program’s 6-1 loss to Iowa Central in 2021.

Next on the fall slate is the NAIA Central-West ITA Regional Championship coming up next Friday through Sunday (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) in Wichita, Kan. The fall portion of the season will then wrap up with a home match versus William Jewell College (Mo.) on Oct. 8.
